Just curious about the Lewis and Clark Bridge in Rainier Oregon

So I go to do half of the STP route backwards from Pdx to Centralia (to hop Amtrak there) and
I ride 50 miles west on 30 to the big bridge over the Columbia to Washington.

I see a climb into the sky, one narrow lane each way, heavy traffic including logging trucks,
and a narrow shoulder littered with pieces of wood of various sizes.

So, terrified, I hitchhiked across the bridge with my bike. I got a ride in less than
10 minutes, I'm happy to say. Comments? Are most people aware of how awful this
bridge is? Is there any talk of improving it?

I guess I just wanted someone to share my pain. For whatever it is worth, the rest of the route up to Centralia was quite quiet on a weekday afternoon near rush hour, with the few logging trucks I saw going south. And almost all drivers gave me room. If anyone wants a concise description of the route - Portland to Centralia WA via Rt. 30, the Lewis and Clark Bridge, and WA state routes etc., email me I guess. - Marc Rose
