Maybe not so much. For the OBRA membership ankle chips total cost $150,000 to $500,000 plus cost od reader system. For the fork mounted ones used this weekend $60,000 including reader.

Ankle chips need to be active RFID. These are 3-10 times as expensive as the ones used Saturday.

Places that have used chips have either used timing companies or charged riders directly. Regardless the costs for the system ultimately come out of the rider's pocket.

There are costs in handing out and collecting chips even if there is a deposit to cover non-return. If you use expensive chips, like the $100 AMB chips a "small" deposit doesn't really get it.

The biggest issue with charging spectators is control of the venue. If you can't control who gets in then people will bypass the money collection point and it more or less just becomes a strong arm donation program. One could put out a "pay for chip timing bucket" for donations. I suggest it goes right next to the "pay for an indoor velodrome" bucket.

1. Increase accuracy of results. Maybe a bit faster but, as noted, we are already pretty fast.

2. Same as #1.

3. Plus - don't have to do as much squinting to read numbers and 10 key data entry. Minus - have to transport, set up and operate another electronic system.

4. Racers get to decide. Monetary cost to racers would be $5/year or less.

5. Opinions vary.

6. Loss rate would not matter if we gave chips permanently to annual members and charged a deposit to single day members. Alternatively we could just not put chips on single day members and just depend on our current system to place them.

7. If the cost is $5/year to annual members the barrier is small.

1. Where is the value add for racers?
2. Where is the value add for promoters?
3. Where is the value add for officials?
4. Is there a tangible increase in racer experience with the use of

5. Would it be worth more to us to put the money that would be used in
a system into an OBRA program (juniors for example)
6. What would be the loss rate per year? What is the true end cost
for all those involved?

entry for new riders?

Maybe in the future chip systems may improve to the point where it may
be worth it but for now, I don't see where it benefits all of us to
justify the costs.

All the CX races I did in the northeast last year utilized timing chips and
its been great. Not sure what company was used, but the results came out
quick. The chips strapped to our legs with velcro so it was pretty easy to
remember to turn back in. It helps prevent riders who haven't been lapped
from being pulled and accurate results. Cross is pretty chaotic and it'd
help ease the officials headache. I think those benefits to racers would
completely justify a raise in membership dues.
Other ideas on how to offset the costs:
- charge a small deposit for the chip, you get it back when you drop your
chip. it doesn't need to be much, but it will help people remember they need
to give it back.
- Charge spectators ala Starcrossed or Cross Vegas style. Even a slight
entry fee (a dollar or two) for the crowds that come to Portland races could
help. There would be some complainers, but I bet a lot of people would be
happy to help support the sport.

Also, with chips walking off, since each chip is coded and assigned to a
racer, isn't there a list of who still has theirs?

I kind of thought making the official's job less time consuming would be a big benefit. Mike, are you really saying that it won't take less time or effort for officials to produce equivalent quality results to the present? I thought the accuracy we have, which seems to be pretty darn good, simply came at the cost of a lot of labor and time for the officials.

I was all set to say, wow, I think those chips are a great idea. But above takes one of my main reasons for thinking so away. Should it not do so?

race and your chip doesn't work, by no fault of your own. Are you then
charged for an extra chip. What if somebody crashes you out and breaks your
chip, do you go after them for the damages. I think the whole timing chip
is silly. The OBRA officials do a great job with all the tools they have
now. No need to add extra expense to an already expensive sport in this
economy. They tried this in St. Louis several years ago and it got shot down
because the system was not reliable and made everything more expensive.

As the multiple suggestions for having volunteers to collect chips indicate, there would be no reduction in volunteer hours with introduction of chips. Interesting that you use the word "volunteer" but then suggest that the race organizer will save money which should go to chip costs. The value to racers would be more accurate results. This would cost something which, ultimately, the racers would need to pay for as there is no one else standing by to put money into this deal.

Mike - Did you tell the demo company that OBRA members are spoiled and we usually get results that day from our awesome OBRA officials? That high tech system better show us some numbers FAST!!!!

Wouldn't we get a chip issued to us for the season? I assume we would return it every race and wait in that crazy line to get it the first time. I'm sure you'll have no problem tracking down chips since the chip number is assigned to a member number and OBRA has all there contact information.

I stayed at a house with a bunch of triathletes this weekend. They spend some crazy $$$ on race fees. Thank goodness for the low fees of bike racing at OBRA. But an extra $5 or so for each member to pay for a system that would work on road, crits, mtn bike, cross seems like a small price to pay for lots of cool lap data.

Just my two cents.

1. The company that did the demo was a chip system seller, not a timing
company. OBRA is looking at purchase of a system so that we would continue
to do timing in-house. There are timing companies that could be hired to
provide this service. Obviously there are costs involved and differences in
how they would do things.

2. The chip company has yet to finish production of the results. In their
defense, they were there mostly to show me the system and so they spent time
doing that rather than operating the system and producing results. I expect
that their results will come out this week. The results that you have seen
were produced by our usual system of photo finish with the FinishLynx camera
combined with manual picking. It should be noted that the chip company will
be using the data from our system to correct the errors in their system
prior to producing results. I expect that the results with either system to
be identical.

The timing company has not yet provided us with any results. All the times
posted on the results came directly from the our officials, like they always
have. We have just not posted them in the past. We are going to work real
hard to provide them at the races this year. It just requires a couple steps
of cut and paste.

We have times for the A race but the operator set it for time of day and
not elapsed time. I could not figure an easy way to do the math at the end
of the race.
I was hoping that the chip company would have sent their info so that their
times for the A would suffice.

One of the guys from the chip timing company was cutting off and collecting the chips at the end of the A race on Saturday. It was one of the guys handing out chips at registration, so I suppose since registration was done for the day, he was available to collect chips. Definitely need a chute to corral people and collect chips at finish.

A couple questions though:

1. Will the timing company collect chips as part of their package, or does the promoter have to provide a couple of extra volunteers to do this?

2. What happened to the time results for the A race on Saturday? Did the chip system fail or was there another reason? Are the results posted hand scored by the officials, and what would the result been if the officials weren't scoring by hand?

On the bright side, this could be the ultimate sandbagger elimination tool. Maybe someone could write a program that automatically scans finish times, and kicks out an upgrade email to anybody finishing 5% ahead of their field.

Mike - Did you tell the demo company that OBRA members are spoiled and we usually get results that day from our awesome OBRA officials?   That high tech system better show us some numbers FAST!!!!

Wouldn't we get a chip issued to us for the season?   I assume we would return it every race and wait in that crazy line to get it the first time.   I'm sure you'll have no problem tracking down chips since the chip number is assigned to a member number and OBRA has all there contact information.

I stayed at a house with a bunch of triathletes this weekend.   They spend some crazy $$$ on race fees.   Thank goodness for the low fees of bike racing at OBRA.   But an extra $5 or so for each member to pay for a system that would work on road, crits, mtn bike, cross seems like a small price to pay for lots of cool lap data.

Just my two cents.

Unless this offsets some cost to the membership, I do not see the

required to put on an event, the organizer should cover the cost of

What if somebody crashes you out and breaks your chip, do you go after them for the damages. I think the whole timing chip is silly. The OBRA officials do a great job with all the tools they have now. No need to add extra expense to an already expensive sport in this economy. Well I don't know about any of you guys, but after I finish a race usually
the only thing I'm thinking is something along the lines of "Why do I enjoy
torturing myself like this?" or "Where is there a cold beer for me to
drink?" or if I'm really lucky "Oh man, I'm so exhausted I can barely stand.
Where is the closest spot I can sit down for a second?"

My point being, since timing chips aren't at every race, it's not habit for
most riders to think to drop their timing chip in the bucket after they
finish. I'd forgotten all about the timing chip system until I was about to
spray my chip with the hose. (At which point I turned it in.)

I agree with Steve in that all that needs to happen is a few volunteers at
the end of the race with cutters to cut the chips and brackets off. At a
Surf City race last year they used the same chips (or if not the same chips,
chips that mounted exactly the same way) and they did exactly that. They set
up the tape in a way that once it was Bell Lap, they'd move a section of
tape so that it corralled finishing racers to a couple volunteers standing
with cutters ready. That way once you crossed the line for the final time
you couldn't exit the tape without either ducking under tape, hopping a
barricade, or going directly passed a smiling volunteer who wanted nothing
more than to take your chip and bracket and put it in the appropriate
bucket.

The logistics of this should not be hard to work out at all. Of course as
field sizes get larger, the number of volunteers needed will have to
increase, but since it takes only a few seconds to clip a chip and bracket
off a bike, I don't see it taking more than 4 people for even the largest
field. And 2 or 3 could probably handle it fine. The hardest part would be
setting up the tape / baracades in such a way to adequately divert the flow
directly to these people. And that's really not a very hard thing to do at
all. That and the announcer can also help to remind folks at the end of the
race (maybe he did, but I didn't hear it.).

I just think the main thing is keeping in mind that until the chips become
more commonplace at race events, racers won't be used to the ritual of
returning chips, and are going to need a little help remembering.

My only other question would be, if we do implement this system, how much
are the chips? And how rediculous would it be to say....included in your
membership is the cost of YOUR chip. You're given a chip for the year just
like your fabric number and if you lose it you have to buy a new one.

I see this whole return of chips being a problem as ..... well. A PROBLEM.
If these things are so important and or costly, I question the technology
being ready for the average everyday group of people who populate the race
scene....especially at Cross. I did return mine by the way. Maybe a few
years in the future all this would be more in line cost and tech-wise.

The barrels at the finish line weren't prominently marked, they merely
looked like garbage cans. For future races I'd funnel the finishers
to one area and have a volunteer remind people to remove the chip.
There were three exit points yesterday, which added to the confusion.

With respects to OBRA using these chips in the future, I'd be in favor
of it if it makes the officials and volunteers jobs easier, they are
the red-headed step child of OBRA. I assume the officials still have
to keep track of laps in case the chip fails, I'm sure it makes
tabulating final results easier.

Once it was mounted, I did not think about it. I was going to put another
bracket on pit bike fork, then after talking to Candi to see if you guys
were also recording riders numbers...decided I would not do that, but depend
on the top rated OBRA lap counters if I needed that pit bike. As far as the
mount and chip, I don't think they were that bad, or that great. I would
just assume I could keep the bracket all cross season and return at end...It
would be a pain to remount at every race. Sounds like the cost is lower
than the other chips we have tried?

In my not so humble opinion....

I didn't like it. The zip tied on to the fork design is kind of an
inconvenience and also given the miniature surfboard shape and how it
tended to stick out 3 or 4 inches. That might hurt during a crash if
you snagged it. Also just the idea that I would stop long enough to
switch the chip to my pit bike during a pit stop mid race is kind of
absurd. I admit that it did sound like a good idea to have the second
mount on the pit bike fork, but when I pitted on the first lap, it
never occurred to me to take the time to switch it to the new bike,
and even if it had occurred to me...it would have been awkward to do
it since it is on the opposite side of the bike from the dismount
side, and it would have taken longer than the bike swap to do. At
least the bike swap can be done while moving thru the pit, the chip
swap would have required me to physically stop to conduct the swap
making a smooth bike exchange unlikely. Of course ... It is also kind
of silly for me personally to suggest the time lost would have a
significant impact on the race for me ... Given how far off the back I
was...:-)

How about this for a new system. I will shoot you with a paint ball gun on
each lap to mark you. On the last lap we will score you on your finish and
then count how many hits you have. I think this could solve a lot of
problems, especially the frustration of the officials...

Jeff,

1.) That is correct that distance is the key to RFID reliability.
Essentially all RFID works the same and in fact the element that goes
in your pet is effectively the same as the one enclosed in a sports
timing chip. The system works by transmitting a power signal which
stimulates the RFID element to reflect back a unique signal. As with
any radio transmission the strength of signal diminishes with distance
(see inverse
square law
). The last time I was shopping RFID elements the
majority of the market offered effective ranges of less than three
feet. The best available at that time were just under six feet (and at
a premium cost).



2. & 3.) Velocity and number of signals is not generally a problem
IF the receiving equipment is properly designed to process that number
signals. Just as your PC can execute thousands of operations a second
so can the RFID system. However, the more design time required for the
hardware the higher the price for such equipment will be. Another
problem for bike races is the wide area the must be covered by the
transceiver. This increases the hardware requirements to deploy the
system.

Ah... but again everyone would need to pin their BarCode on correctly. Right now if everyone just pinned their numbers on correctly that would greatly reduce the number of errors.

It is not necessarily the ill placed number that the official misses. It is the next two or three rider's numbers as the official attempts to read the ill placed number.

OBRA has outgrown the "Oh well everyone knows who I am." way of thinking. EVERYONE needs to take care to make sure their number is readable and all of their buddies numbers are readable.

How about one of those electronic pet tags that people inject into their kitties or doggies?

Each participant gets a tag injected into their neck before the event. A scanner will read the tag as each participant crosses the finish line.

also be other chip systems out there that use less expensive chips. The
word that I get is that only the AMB is dependable for cycling races. There
are some technical reasons for this that I could guess at but I don't have
the real details, just the word that the others don't work.

Actually the chip costs don't really need to be high. RFID chips can be
real cheap. The problem is that AMB quite rightly realizes that they will
make more money selling chips than they will selling systems since the
market is much bigger. (Just like how printers are chip but cartridges cost
lots.) For this reason they use proprietary chips. If someone made a system
using off-the-shelf RFID chips the cost would go down and we would be using
them all the time.

By the way, I agree with everything that Serge said in his note below. Chip
timing is useful but costly as Serge listed below. OBRA is currently using
photo, either regular video or line scanner. This works great for road and
track events but for cross there are problems. The biggest one is that in
cross you need to account for every single time that a rider crosses the
finish line. For the 794 riders at Alpenrose averaging 5-10 laps/ race this
meant looking at 4,500 - 5,000 + images. At 5 second per image this is 7 +
hours to just list the order across the finish line and then MANY hours more
to tabulate, correct errors, re-tabulate, review images, etc. That is the
reason why for the first results we are using manual results gathered by 4
separate officials. These results are gathered by Candi and she does data
entry. This manual system has the most errors but allows production of
results which can occur at the race and will nearly always be available
later that day. After these are posted we get notes regarding errors,
evaluate the recorded images, etc. This process takes a couple days. This
past week there were problems with how the officials recorded their manual
results which greatly increased the amount of time it took to deal with
those results and also decreased their accuracy. We will be addressing
those issues for the next race. We were also inhibited by poor number
placement or positions at the finish line (sometimes by people that should
know better) as shown in the pictures below. (PLEASE be more attentive to
number placement and your position at the finish.)

All results systems have costs and benefits in terms of personnel,
equipment, time required, accuracy, etc. All systems have potential error
points some of which will turn into actual errors. As with most decisions
there is a cost/benefit analysis that needs to be done. This year that came
down against use of chips.

can vary significantly and have a huge impact on manual and photo timing.
While Chip timing has the most Equipment on the course by a huge margin, it
costs relatively little to have a 2nd read point as a backup to account for
catastrophic equipment failure at the finish line thus limiting it's
equipment issues to a few people. The costs are much higher for photo for a
backup. Human error on manual timing is huge and increases significantly
when the number of participants increases, as such it is best suited for
races with a small number of participants. All of this must be weighed when
considering the reliability of the timing system used.

As to why we are not doing chip timing this year, I can not say. I will
however be glad to list many of the issues there were last year with the
chip timing.

1. Cost. Each chip costs us $80. We are currently missing 30 or so from last
year's cross series at a total of roughly $2400.

2. Many people failed to wear their chips. In triathlon and running where
chip timing is used a lot, failure to wear a chip often results in a DQ.
Because chip timing is new to cycling, we manually added everyone who failed
to wear a chip to the results. Other than people not wearing chips, we found
we missed very few people. A little under 1 a race which I think comes out
to 0.5%

3. Registration issues. Just as manually timing runs into difficulty when
you don't know who belongs to what number, so does chip timing. For the
first race we didn't have registration information until close to a week
after the race. After that we got the registration list in the form of
manual results either the night of the race (sometime after 8PM usually) or
the next morning. This list was occasionally missing participants who we
knew from our data as being in a race. If you look over last year's race
results on Athleteslounge.com you will find at least a few 'unknown' in
there.

4. Cost. Our timing staff had to be on site at 6:00am on race morning and
didn't get to leave until around 4:00pm. Add to this time spent assigning
chips, the need for 3+ people for the day, 3+ hours of adding manuals and
registrant information, Equipment costs, travel, etc. All these costs are
paid for by the race director or more accurately the participant. In the
case of the Cross Crusade, we charged our minimum of $2500 and at the losses
hoping the timing would help us advertise AthletesLounge.

I hope this helps shed some light on chip timing.

What about assigning chips with each racer's annual OBRA registration? You
could include it's cost as part of one's registration fees. If it's not
returned at the end of the season, OBRA could charge the individual for it.
For those that don't register each year and only buy one day licenses, you
could still use manual/photo finish timing, which would also serve as a back
up in case the chip timing system fails.

Keep in mind that this is purely anecdotal, but in my experience it
just plain did not work. I was issued a chip, I wore it as
instructed, after completing the race I returned the chip as
requested. Later I learned that I was DNFed as the chip recorded only
one lap I was there and I can tell you I finished the race.
Misplaced faith in technology or inadequate data support? I cannot
say, since no one ever offered any explanation. The only thing I was
left with was that the chip system did not work at all.

What about assigning chips with each racer's annual OBRA registration? You could include it's cost as part of one's registration fees. If it's not returned at the end of the season, OBRA could charge the individual for it. For those that don't register each year and only buy one day licenses, you could still use manual/photo finish timing, which would also serve as a back up in case the chip timing system fails.

a huge margin, it costs relatively little to have a 2nd read point as a
backup to account for catastrophic equipment failure at the finish line
thus limiting it's equipment issues to a few people. The costs are much
higher for photo for a backup. Human error on manual timing is huge and
increases significantly when the number of participants increases, as
such it is best suited for races with a small number of participants.
All of this must be weighed when considering the reliability of the
timing system used.



As to why we are not doing chip timing this year, I can not say. I will
however  be glad to list many of the issues there were last year with
the chip timing.
