- Clarification... The weight IS a big deal, but the relative
advantage you might gain vs. the sacrafices you make to lose that tiny
bit of body mass or purchase that extra carbon part doesn't
necessarily make much difference. More, it has to do with your natural
physiology or genetic platform that you have to work with.

I have used the wattage calculator found on the
www.analyticcycling.com site with good results. It matches up well to
my powermeter, as long as you enter the proper coeffecients for
surface roughness, frontal wind area, slope, distance, time, etc.
Precise accuracy isn't as important as it being consistent, in my
opinion. It gives you a method of calculating the wattage of your
efforts, and comparing them to later tests. The tool is also handy for
illustrating things like "less mass on a particular climb, how much
faster?" You will quickly realize that the weight isn't such a big
deal. Also that "power:weight" ratio plays a significantly varying
role, depending on the grade of the climb. I geeked out with the site
when trying to decide on getting a new full suspension mtb. "How much
would the 3 extra pounds cost me?" Turned out to be quite minimal on a
