Welcome to Portland! Greatest place to live in the USA.

The west side of the Willamette River is better for access to routes and roads. While the east side is fine, there as just more choices and options on the west side.

Where you opt to live depends, of course, on your budget and any commuting consideration you may have. Hillsboro has lots of living options plus easy access to west side routes. Northwest, Skyline Road and Southwest are all pricey - at least for me - though all are ideal.

A good resource is the Blueberry Rides web site (http://www.blueberryrides.com/). Click on "Ride Maps" for bunch of routes, cue sheets and maps. You can print and align the maps with a map of the Portland area to get an idea of where the routes are (some are in Vancouver, WA, and down to Salem and Scio).

Download Google Earth (http://earth.google.com) and the Bike There
overlay (http://www.metro-region.org/article.cfm?ArticleID=15341), and
you'll get a lovely visual representation of the hills you'd have to
climb on the west side, as well as all the bike-happy streeets.

You could also pick up Rubber to the Road Volumes I and II, and check
out some of those Portland-specific rides.

Anywhere close-in is good, IMHO.

While there may be some areas of town that are not quite as close as others to the areas where you may like to ride for training, I have to say that there is no place in Portland where you would not have access to good roads for training. After all, you have a bike, so getting to the place you consider your training ride start is just not very difficult, no matter where you live. Base your decision about where to move on some other criteria, like how easy it is to commute to work on your bike or how far the walk is to the nearest microbrewery. There are good bike routes for training all over the Portland metro area. If you like, I can provide you with some routes to give you a taste of how many great places to ride there are around here.
