Doctors often treat infections with antibiotics for 7-10 days,
sometimes 14-21 days depending on the site and seriousness of the
infection. The number of days is rather arbitrary. But there is new
data coming out. They are actually studying this issue in some African
towns where getting any antibiotics is difficult and expensive. A
shorter course of antibiotics could save millions of dollars. They are
finding that for some infections, like a pneumonia and bronchitis, that
3-5 days maybe just as good and even better than 7-10 days. The longer
course makes antibiotic resistance more likely and doesn't make the
patient better any sooner once the fever is gone.. You should check with
your own doctor but if you have a fever even with a cold, it is
advisable not to exercise at all. Rest, drink fluids and sleep. Once
the fever is gone, if you feel up to it, you can ride but take it easy
the first few days. As for sinus infections, antibiotics often don't
help anyway. Nasal lavage(irrigiating your nose) with a salt solution
often works much better. But you should always check with your personal
physican about your particular condition.
