Crank arm length for Track?

Funny you mention that, because I actually HAVE John Beckman's old Gitane
track back - completely restored and running campy 170mm cranks.

Erick,

Would you go shorter (167, 165) for match sprint? I believe shorter cranks
are easier to spin high rpm's. John Beckman was tall and spun short cranks
in pursuits like an electric motor. I'm 6'3 and have made good use of both
165s and 170s. I'm more comfortable with the 170s and find then suitable for
most any track event. I also use them for road fixie riding to train my
stroke for track.

However, unlike R.M. I have never used a cadence display so I could not tell
you what rpm's I'm turning.

I think Mike Murray once posted a link to a website that had all the crank
length/power/rpm's/speed calculations worked out.

Mike, where is that?

I ride/rode 170mm on the track. I'm 6'5". I really got them spinning, too.

I think 175 would be okay for just about anything besides match sprint.

Hey all,

I'm looking for some recommendations on crank arm length for use at
Alpenrose next year. I don't have a frame yet, but plan to buy a real track
frame, not use a road style single speed frame. I'm 6'-5" tall and use 175mm
cranks on the road. I've been told the bottom bracket height is a factor to
consider.

I was assuming I should get something shorter than my road cranks, but how
much shorter? 170? 165? I assume there is some personal preference within
reason, I just don't want to be hitting my pedals on the track and sliding
down to my doom, because I slapped on something too long.

Feel free to respond off line.

Thanks,

-Tim

Dan,

Beckbird used 171 cranks for pursuit when they were available, and 170 when
they were not. He now uses 175 on the road and is retired from the track.
I did a fixed gear road ride two weeks ago with 175 arms and did 174 rpm for
2 minutes. Last weekend I did 30 seconds twice at 184 rpm with the long
cranks.

In the "old days" (with Phil Sanders) we were told that the bottom bracket
height from the surface should be at least 10 3/4". Anything lower and you
risk scraping the track with your pedals. So if a track bike has a bottom
bracket height of 10 1/2" with 175 cranks, the probability if contacting the
track in the turns at a slow speed (e.g., 12 - 15 mph) would be very high.
Also, given gearing and torque ratios, I doubt if there is much advantage at
Alpenrose doing a pursuit with a 175 crank arm length vs a 172. Across my
track bikes and depending on the event, I riide 167.5, 170, and 172.

i use 170 too. On that first slow lap i have seen some clippage / touching
of pedals. But usually it was becasue of a larger longer platform pedal...
