Ryan Trebon stretched a small first-lap gap into a formidable 30-second
advantage to win the elite men's crown at the 2006 USA Cycling national
cyclo-cross championships on Saturday in Providence, Rhode Island.

It was the first elite 'cross title for Trebon, who finished second in 2004
and 2005. Trebon's win was reminiscent of his cross-country victory at the
2006 USA Cycling national mountain-bike championships. With the two wins,
Trebon has become the first American man to net the elite cyclo-cross and
cross-country championships in a single season.
Behind Trebon a chase group containing Jonathan Page (Cervelo), Todd Wells
(GT), Tim Johnson (Cannondale-cyclocrossworld.com), Jeremy Powers (Jelly
Belly) and Barry Wicks (Kona) tried in vain to bring the lanky Kona rider
back.
Page, who has been out with a shoulder injury for most of the season,
out-sprinted Johnson for second, while Wells outkicked Powers for fourth.
Wicks crashed on the final corner.
Trebon's win came after Danny Summerhill (TIAA-Cref/Clif Bar) repeated as
elite junior national champion, and Jesse Anthony (Clif Bar) netted his
seventh-career national title, taking the U23 crown
