My number has more than 2 inches of white space on all four sides. So
it's about 4.5 inches taller and wider than it needs to be. Which means
that why I put it on my jersey, it gets in my armpits and I can't use my
back pockets. It's impossible to pin it on correctly. It's also very
unattractive.

I suspect it's too late to get different numbers for 2007. Scissors?"

I would not suggest that. Here is the rule:
"10. - NUMBERS
...
10.3 - No rider shall cut, fold, mutilate, trim or apply stickers to the
race number, nor shall they sell, trade or give the issued number to another
individual. Penalty or disqualification is at the discretion of the Race
Official."

I find the numbers think a bit funny. I am smaller than just about
everybody but I can still get the numbers on OK. How come it is an issue
for bigger people with more "real estate" to pin it to?

That inch you propose cutting off is where the River City Bicycles'
logos are. While I appreciate wanting less flapping on your back, we've
got to take care of the sponsors that help underwrite OBRA. As great as
the folks at River City are, I doubt they'd be so generous in their
support without that piece of visibility.

Negative space is definitely required to see the numbers, but the "padding"
outside the numbers is not all negative space. I could cut off 1 inch all
the way around and it would be just as easy to read...

And we're not talking about breaking the rules, we're talking about changing
them...well, changing the numbers anyway.

Right! put a plastic card on the front and call it good. That would never
work I know! I know!
I understand the contrast thing as I did graphic design for a few years so I

stand corrected... but also I am a pretty small guy (5'8") and had no
problem fitting the number on my jersey at the cross races in Eugene this
fall. They do not seem that large. I think my fold idea was just a guy
thing... "trying to solve the problem"... maybe he really just wanted
someone to "listen"... not solve the problem. I have given enough bad
advice for the day. I be done!

I have been told by the judges, that the white space around the numbers make it easier to read them at the finish. That is the point of having a number, so the judges know who you are.

I think that Erik's complaint was not that the numbers themselves are
too big, but that the huge chunk of spandex they are printed on is. Can
we get ride of some of the extra material?

My number has more than 2 inches of white space on all four sides. So
it's about 4.5 inches taller and wider than it needs to be. Which means
that why I put it on my jersey, it gets in my armpits and I can't use my
back pockets. It's impossible to pin it on correctly. It's also very
unattractive.

I suspect it's too late to get different numbers for 2007. Scissors?
