Dave,

I am 235-250 depending on the time of year. I ride nothing but custom built
wheels because of my size. All the factory built wheels I have owned were
ruined very shortly after I got them. My first custom road and mountain
wheels were built by Erik Vickers at Hutch's in Bend, (now I think he is at
the Bike Peddler in Salem) and I have been riding them for over 8 years and
they have never come out of true. Last year, Dean at Bike Central built me
a killer set of Zipp 808 rims laced to Dura Ace hubs for my triathlon bike.
I have almost 1400 miles on them and have hit my share of bumps and they are
still in pristine shape. I rode in an Ironman with these wheels and Tufo
clincher/tubular tires so I feel I got the best of both worlds. Zipp makes
a Clydesdale wheelset in their 404 and the 808 rims but I would go with the
Dura Ace hubs instead of the factory hubs and someone like Dean, Erik, or
Dan Houghton build you a set. All these guys have great reputations for
building strong wheels. Granted, I have not done a bunch sprint with these
wheels or collided with someone but have hit potholes and gone over curbs
(sorry Dean) and they haven't exploded yet. Email me if you want contact
info for any of those guys. Hope this helps.

Subject: [OBRA Chat] Carbon wheels

I am interested in getting some carbon wheels and have been looking at a few
models. I know a lot of people out there are riding on carbon wheels, and I
was curious for some general feedback on your experiences.

I am looking at Mavic Carbones, Reynolds Stratus DV Clincher, Zipp 404, and
Shimano Dura-Ace wheels. I like the idea of ease of service of a clincher,
but have heard that the ride quality of a tubular makes a huge difference.

I weigh about 200lbs, so strong is good. I need to lose weight on my body
before I worry about the lightest set of wheels on the market. Thus,
reliability and strength are key.

Please reply off-list.

Thank you for your time.

I confess to being the rider whose rear Zipp 303 crumbled in BB3 last season (at least I didn't end up hitting the deck!). I weigh about 160 and happened to be running an 11/23 at the time, so I am not a particularly big guy. I have to concede that I made a VERY poor choice of wheels for that race and I think that wheel selection is the key point with respect to the wheel failure I experienced. That was my first season racing in OR and at the time didn't know the BB course (the road is pretty rough and potholed). In hindsight, I wouldn't have run ANY carbon wheelset. Lesson learned.

That being said, the 303 is also a particularly lightweight and fragile wheel. I wouldn't recommend this wheel for anyone who weighs more than 160. In an uphill sprint finish, I can feel it flexing under me. In that race, I did somehow clip a pothole (and never even felt it). The tire flatted at about 30mph on a downhill going into a curve. I think that the problem was just that - leaning into a curve, the rim struck the pavement and cracked. Once out of true, it caught in the brake caliper which opened it up like a can opener. Result - completely shattered/folded wheel underneath me.

Since then, I bought a set of Easton Tempest II which are much more like a 404, only stiffer. This is a far better choice for someone of my size and it weighs only a 100g more. I've used them in road races and crits and they've lived up to my expectations. In the end (and as always, this is just my opinion, personal preference, or whatever term you choose) I believe that in a similar circumstance, if the Eastons or any other carbon rim touched the pavement at that speed the result would have likely been the same.

Bottom line, I don't really want to debate this, just throw some facts out there regarding what happened last season as a better point of reference. This is a choice each of us makes and I suppose that with carbon, the possibility of a catastrohpic failure is always there.

I suppose we're all sorry I brought this up, but if you're going to accuse someone of violating the law you might as well have the right law. You may drive drunk, I shouldn't accuse you of rape, even though they're both wrong and both have thier respective punishments.

As far as your example, Brian, the value has nothing to do with it. If you rob someone at gunpoint and all you get is a penny it's basically the same as getting 10Gs. Similarly, let's say 2 photographers took exaclty the same pictue, one licenses for free or has contributed to the public domain and one licenses for 10K. It's not illegal for me to use the free license even though its value to photographer 1 is 10K. Similarly, let's say I post a diagram of a novel circuit on Shanes's site that cost me 10M to develop. If someone copies my diagram, it isn't copyright infringement becuase you can't copright strictly factual or functional elements. (We won't go into patent issues).

Don't fret. Last post on this issue. It's just a little pet peeve of mine.

Consider this, if I find a penny on the street and put it in my pocket. Is it ?finder keeper?? Then if I find a $10,000 bundle of $100 bills and put it in my pocket is it still ?finder keeper??

What should I do with the penny?

Well, actually it isn't theft at all, it's copyright infringement. Theft and infringment have completely completely different legal and historical roots. You are making the basic mistake of confusing the "thing" with the rights in the thing. For example, if I went into Shane's studio and took his hard copies of his photos or a disk with his digital photos that would be theft (of the thing) but it wouldn't be infringement. If I made unlicensed copies of his photos but didn't remove the originals from his studio that would be infringement becuase I would be exercising rights with respect to the thing that have been granted on an exclusive, but limited basis to Shane.

It's copyright 101

Ed

Ted wrote:

With all due respect, I should mention that attempting to "lift" an image
from Shane's site is attempted theft. Please do not steal images from
photographers. Are the images currently displayed on your site yours? If
not, is your current use of these images authorized by the photographers?

I'm sure Shane would be happy to sell you a rights-managed usage license for
any image you like. You are the end-user of a copyrighted photo and as
such, you have the legal responsibility to obtain permission to use the
photo before doing so. Permission is usually granted with a usage license
from the copyright holder.

Here's a price quote for a standard stock cycling image from the Alamy.com
pricing calculator; I selected values that would most likely apply to the
terms of use on your blog:

Image use: editorial

Details of that use: editorial-online

Image size: up to 1/4 screen

Placement: secondary screen

Duration: 6 months

Territory: Region (PNW)

Product industry: Personal Use Only (blog)

Industry details: Personal Use Only (blog)

Price: $200

If you wanted to use the image for a year on your front page at 1/2 page
size or larger, then the personal use license would be $680, again based on
pricing from a mid-level stock agency like Alamy. Now, don't get me
started on all of the microstock agencies that sell licenses for $1. (They
are partly to blame for the drastic drop in the value of photography over
the last several years.)

Shane would likely quote you a lower price than the example I used above.
But I think you get the point - photos are not free. Also realize that the
license fees from local photographers for OBRA images (including mine) are
extremely low; far lower than required to meet expenses and make a profit.

If a race promoter or OBRA were to actually hire a freelance photographer
for exclusive coverage of an event, then the fee would likely be similar to
what an experienced and established wedding photographer would charge:

- Expenses (e.g., travel): $100+

- Creative Fee: $80-100/hr for 6 hours of shooting at the venue

- Post-processing Fee: 8 hours (usually many more) for processing the
1,000-1,500 RAW images (culling, cropping, exposure/color corrections,
resizing for web display, archiving, exporting to TIFF for Photoshop edits
or directly to JPEG) at $40-$60/hour

- Image licensing: depends on the use, but could be in the $1,000s

I never intended to steal anyone's pictures. I sent out some e-mail's
about using someone's from oregonvelo.com, or the couple of other
photographers that post links on the OBRA list. I waited a day.
NOBODY responded. Then I tried looking around on flickr and other
sites.

I intend to give the photographers interested full credit, endless
plugs, and buy them a beer whenever the situation arises. If anyone
is interested in donating a snapshot or two under these conditions,
get in touch. I don't need pro pictures, just a couple snaps of guys
who were involved in the outcome of the race.

On another note, one of the photographers I bothered referred to me as
a "journalist". I take great offense to this label. My little blog
is based on hearsay, rumors, gossip, and completely biased personal
opinion. These may revolve around race results, but those aren't
really news, they're just a record of the event ("50 Cat 1-2 cyclists
rode around in circles north of Corvallis and Chad Hartley rode
fastest" is about as deep as my "reporting" is going to go.). I think
the term "gossip-monger" would be more appropriate.

Anyways,
the site is at raceOregon.blogspot.com
it still needs pictures.
sorry to some of you and thank you to others.

maybe it would be cheaper to go at it all secret agent style. Fix the more
expensive objects with gps finders, so that you can locate them within a few
yards of where they reside. It may not be cost effective, and I'm not sure
if such things exist on the consumer market affordably, but IMHO a hundred
extra dollars to save an $800 sign would be worth it.

dunno, just my 2cents.

PEAS!

Were they Zipps? Because those are for lightweights only. Notice how they pucker at the spokes from tension that is barley adequate. On the other hand, I have seen FSA carbon wheels fracture from impact or crash and still finish a race.
That's just my personal observation.

I know I have an unpopular opinion, but after seeing the carnage from last year's Banana Belt, I'll never ride carbon wheels in a mass start event. I saw a guy hit a pothole right in front of me, and his wheel literally folded 90 degrees. While I've broke metal wheels, I've never broke them like that.

Like the original poster, I'm close to 200 lbs. Sometimes being big means you shouldn't ride all the trick stuff out there.

To second Erik's point, at your weight I would not take too many chances. Also, at 200 lbs, lightweight wheels are not going to make much difference, if any, in climbing. Better to focus on reliability. If you want aerodynamic wheels such as Zipp 404's, either get the clydesdale wheels, or get the Zipp clinchers. With the clincher tires today, I doubt you will notice much difference, and because the Zipp clinchers have aluminium rims, they are stronger. They are a bit heavier than the tubulars that are all carbon, but as I said, I doubt that the extra wheel weight is the reason why you will ever get dropped on a climb when you are competing against 150 lb climbers.

Lat year I blew a brand new tubular in the first use, and watched $80 go away. The year before, i hit a pothole and broker both the front and rear carbon rim. Foolishly, I raced another 40 miles on both broken wheels and finished the race, but when I took the tires off, the wheels fell apart. It appears that the tires were the only thing holding the wheels together. I doubt that would have happened with aluminium rims.

I still buy a lot of all carbon wheels because I am a weight weenie depite my 182 lb weight, but I would not recommend that you do as I do.

In cases such as myself- read heavy guys- it would appear the way to go is go with a "Clydesdale" type of wheel (extra spokes, etc.) to make up for the increased weight of the rider.

In cases such as myself- read heavy guys- it would appear the way to go is go with a "Clydesdale" type of wheel (extra spokes, etc.) to make up for the increased weight of the rider.

Well, unless you consider Magnus Backsted weight it at over 200 lbs.

I know I have an unpopular opinion, but after seeing the carnage from last
year's Banana Belt, I'll never ride carbon wheels in a mass start event. I
saw a guy hit a pothole right in front of me, and his wheel literally folded
90 degrees. While I've broke metal wheels, I've never broke them like that.

Like the original poster, I'm close to 200 lbs. Sometimes being big means
you shouldn't ride all the trick stuff out there.
