Banana Belt map

It shouldn't matter where you start from on the map,
as the course is a loop and the elevation profile
calculates the whole loop.

Thus, no matter where you start you will hit the same
number of hills the same number of times and
cumulatively climb the same number of feet. If my
thinking is wrong on this, just let me know and I can
update the map's animation to start and end at the
actual start/finish line.

The online map calculates elevation gain in this way:

1. The course route is created by joining small line
segments together. At various intervals along the
segments, sample points are used to query elevation
data from the U.S. Geological Survey (i.e. satellite
data).

2. This elevation data are plotted on a graph to
create the elevation profile.

3. The net elevation is calculated by adding together
all the elevation gains between the sample points.

Thus, the net elevation gain is an estimate based on
the number of points used to create the route and the
accuracy of the available elevation data (which can be
skewed when going over a high bridge, for instance).

In practice, I have found it to be fairly accurate...
but it should not be used in a court of law, for
example.

hope this helps,
Jeff

If you look at the animated map, the starting point is at SW Scoggins Valley Road at the dam (which is not the start/finish). I believe that the extra 588 ft. is from that point to the start/finish. My guess anyway. Jeff?

I think if it's a loop, net elevation gain (i.e. total feet climbed
minus total feet descended) has to be zero. Any thing you climb up, you
have to go down by the time you get back to the start/finish line. Must
be something else.

It's 750 ft on the first lap, and 1,338 on the last one.

I noticed the map's posted elevation gain is 1,338/lap. The BB flyer says 750/lap.

Anyone know which is correct?

Thanks for mapping the course. It's great to see what we will ride
before hand.

For those of you doing the Banana Belt this weekend, I
put together a map/profile to help you strategerize:

http://www.onemillionrevolutions.org/maps/map.php?ID=283

I'll try to make more of these for races throughout
the season.

enjoy,
Jeff
