This is the proposed new law:

It is a good law, and I hope you will all support it.
Our current bike brake law, ORS 815.280 was written in the 1970's adopted in Oregon in 1975, and didn't really think about bicycles with front brakes.
Our current law says make the braked wheel skid. Can you make your front wheel skid? Can you do it without crashing?
This was based on the Uniform Model Language at the time.
The new proposed law is based on the current Uniform Model Language.
The only thing that isn't directly from the UML was the last phrase, which says a fixed gear doesn't need a separate brake.
It does not say a fixed gear doesn't need a brake.
If you support this new proposed law, the best thing to do is to email Sen. Atkinson at: sen.jasonatkinson@state.or.us
Let him know you support it. That way he can show broad statewide support for this common sense update to our bicycle law, which will make all bicycles with front brakes legal, and clarify that fixed gear bicycles are legal if they can brake (just like all bikes) regardless of having or not having a caliper brake.
Please feel free to forward this to people off list who support SB 729, and as always I am happy to answer questions about this issue.
