MORE HISTORY

Darell Provencher

2007-03-06

Within our Team Rose City ranks I should mention Dean Parsley, who I believe won at least three national 40K TT championships in 1990 (men 55-59?), 2000 (Men 65-69), and 2001 (Men 65-69). I think it was the early 90's that Dean broke his age group national record in the 40K TT in Peoria, OR, but it was not recognized because at that time the course was not certified by the USCF. Dean is also a cancer survivor and rode the Livestrong Ride in Portland 2005, only weeks after his last chemo. Dean will be 72 this year, and is still riding strong.

I can give you two quotes from Franz...? In my first ever criterium, in Sherwood Oregon, when I asked him why he'd hooked me into a curb coming out of a corner he said "you shouldn't have been there".? Some years later, we were standing in some parking lot and he leveled "the look" at me and said, "you (should) never quit racing, you'll die".? He was a hard man and I admired him.

I was amazed at how much the man accomplished in his youth, not to mention the number of national titles he earned as a Master.

I am sure others have more details than I.

What about Frans Pauwels, who owned Kissler?s Bicycles in Beaverton and I believe helped to build Alpenrose?

He raced in the Tour in 1948 and 1949, before he moved from Belgium to the U.S.

He died about ten years ago, but I can?t remember the date.

Frans Pauwels kon in de Tour geen potten breken (foto archief Sport-Express).
