The ugly downside to the system actually working...

I have a similar story in regards to getting my bikes back after filing a
police report and serial numbers. The crooks were caught with the bikes in
their car trunk, but arrested on other charges.

Unfortunately the bikes were returned in perfect condition.... With the
promise of insurance money, I had already picked out new bikes at the shop.

My son had a bike stolen a few years back. Having a bit of OCD I had the
serial number handy so we made a police report figuring it was a waste of
time. A couple weeks latter the thief is pulled over driving a stolen car
full of bikes, also probably stolen. Sean's bike was the only one with a
serial number on a police report so we got it back pretty quickly.

This of course caused be to become even more compulsive so I stored the
serial numbers of all bikes in the family in multiple locations. In doing
this I found that most track bikes don't have serial numbers.

This is what I asked for when I purchased insurance. I wanted to make sure
that I got replacement Cost for my bikes.

Either way call your agent if you are not sure.

Flyers are on the way to those that requested them.

Did he say it was for replacement cost? Sometimes you will not get
replacement cost for bicycles without a rider.

Given all the emails on this subject today, I got a little paranoid so I
called my Allstate rep. He informed me that I did not require an additional
rider on my homeowners policy for my bikes because it is included as
personal property. Just take pics, record serial numbers, and save any
receipts and keep them in a safe place. In lieu of receipts, if you are
tight with the store you purchased it from and they can vouch for what you
had etc, then that should be good enough. However, if you are a renter, you
have to have a separate rider on additional property such as bikes. He told
me I could give him the information for safe keeping if I wanted or keep it
in a safe.

As a promoter I can say that recording the number on each and every bike is
not gonna happen. Period.

Evan and Jean are both dead on right!

* Take a few minutes to record the serial numbers of you bike(s).
* Save all receipts for all personal property and home improvements.
* Get a Rider in your insurance for replacement cost on your bikes, it
pays off. I used it to replace a bent bike after I was hit by an uninsured
motorist.
* Store the information in several places, but it is best to have a
copy in a safe deposit box at your bank.

Dont rely on the bike shop to have easy access to your serial number
information, they all have it, but the time it takes to dig it up and is not
always the shops top priority. Bikes can be recovered if they are reported,
nothing is more satisfying than busting a bike thief.

I recently sent out a flyer to my clients with tips on this type of personal
security, send me note and I will forward a copy to you.

Check with your insurance agent. Safeco Renters Insurance DOES NOT require that rider. At least not in Washington.
