Online Route Mapping Applications

Here's another, TopoRoute. (Not yet mentioned?), also a GoogleMap.

Pros: full page, not as many clicks to create, as it has a Follow Road
feature (and, should you need, you can turn that part off, for off-road
parts). Con: Undo is a bit tedious.

Also take a look at www.bikely.com. I've tried it just once but it seems to work pretty well.

The total elevation only show-up when you create it. So, you need to write it down.

Many of you may be aware of some of these online route mapping applications, mostly based on GoogleMaps API. I have done some research on a couple but I am still looking for the perfect application.

I thought I would share my research with the programs I have used and see what others have used. Maybe I can find that perfect fit.

At the very least some of you may become aware of some new decent rides.

Here are the applications I have worked with:

URL: http://www.routeslip.com/
My Routes: Here is a link to a familiar route: http://www.routeslip.com/routes/20856. You can search all my routes under my username: mbenno.
Pros: Good at plotting longer routes. Shows elevation gain, has a nice training log.
Cons: Really bad undo features, Difficult to use UI, Can?t edit training events. Difficult to start maps in locations other than your home city.

URL: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/
My Routes: Here is one: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=559573
Pros: Simple to create routes
Cons: Cannot create a list of my routes, slow elevation calculator, limited functionality, anyone can edit routes.

URL: http://www.favoriterun.com/
My Routes: Here is a link to a familiar route: http://www.favoriterun.com/94147. You can search all my routes under my username: mbenno.
Pros: decent interface, good undo functionality, can add routes together saving time.
Cons: running specific, has trouble with long routes.

Hi Michael,

In efforts to find the "perfect" route mapping
application, I ended up writing my own (and perfect is
in the eye of the beholder). I used it for the Banana
Belt and Cherry Pie maps I put together, and I also
use it for mapping out triathlon courses (I'm a race
director). Here are some examples of the maps it
created:

http://www.onemillionrevolutions.org/maps/map.php?ID=33
http://www.onemillionrevolutions.org/maps/map.php?ID=5
http://www.onemillionrevolutions.org/maps/map.php?ID=258

If you want to play around with the back-end, you can
access it here:

http://www.onemillionrevolutions.org/maps/trial.php

The best part is, if you have suggestions or
criticisms, you can tell me and I'll implement it.
It's worked well for me and a variety of other
triathlons and marathons so far.

hope this helps,
Jeff
