Just a thought on volunteers vs. paid officials. Just because someone is
paid does not guarantee better quality. It may help with attendance but
unless they really want to be there you are going to run into the same
frustrations with work quality. Over the past several years I have overseen
many volunteers and paid individuals. I'll take volunteers any day of the
week. Most of the time they want to be there and they're willing to help as
long as you ask and realize that without them you/your event are nothing.
Be there to serve them don't tell them to serve you. It saves a lot of
money and headaches.

One can only expect so much from volunteers. OBRA is justifiably proud
of being the "low cost leader" in bicycle racing but the down side of
that is an over reliance on volunteers. Without compensation it's
difficult for people to stop working on what pays the bills in order to
work on something else for free. Ditto for giving up family time. Good
feelings and noble intentions only go so far, especially for positions
requiring higher levels of commitment.
Further, I'd caution folks to be wary for trying to peer pressure people
into taking on more than they're comfortable with. That sometimes
backfires and people with valuable skills are lost entirely (a recent
lesson from another volunteer powered organization of which I am a
associated).
In summary I think OBRA is really overdue for a discussion about how the
organization is funded and the direct impact this has on providing
officials.

Perhaps this fall?
I was going to do the last one but was too busy.

Way OT on this one:
I am in the process of purchasing my first domain name and building my first
website. I have experience with neither and was looking at GoDaddy.com as
the place to buy the domain name.
Does anyone have experience doing this? Anything I should be looking out for
or avoiding? Lastly, for someone creating their very first web page/ site,
where should I go to learn how to do this?
Please reply off list and all suggestions welcome.
Thanks.

Do you have something that you are willing to sell?

I attended the training held at HP in corvallis earlier this year. It was
excellent in terms of material and initial classroom prep for officiating.
I must have missed something however, and that is how do I take what I
learned and go work a race? I travel a bit during the summer, so my
schedule is hit and miss in regard to races, however I have no idea how I
sign-up to officiate a race. Do I contact the promoter, or do I await a
call from OBRA? What is the process, once trained, to actually officiate a
race? If I need to be more proactive and hunt down promoters, or OBRA
officials to keep my name in the hat for races I can work, I can do that, I
just need to know that I need to. Thanks to Seth and all the officials at
OBRA, I am willing to work a few and give you all a much needed break, just
need a little info on how. Thanks again. -Rod

Good questions Rob, we should have covered this in the training.
At almost every race we offer mentoring for new officials. We even subsidize
this training and pay them. You would ride along at a road race, score at
the finish line of time at a time trial.
The process of appointing officials goes like this.
I send out a message on the Officials remailer asking for availability. I
then appoint a Chief Referee (CR) and let that person know who has
volunteered to work that race. It is then their responsibility to seek out
and fill all the open slots. Many try to fill from the regional area they
represent so that the race organizers are not saddled with excessive mileage
reimbursements. They will hold an officials meeting the morning of the
event and give out assignments and delineate responsibilities.
If you have upcoming, available time please let us know and we will work
with you to gain the experience you need to function as an official.

Anyone have one to sell? I am in Eugene, and could pay for shipping if you

Those of us who are on the OBRA officials email have been chatting alot the
past 24 hours in regards to officiating, giving time back to OBRA, etc.
Kenji said it best last night-OBRA is more than just clip and pedal-we all
need to give back in many ways, other than just paying to race.
My question for everyone out there--how many times have you taken advantage
of host housing when you travel to a race? Whether it is staying with a
friend, a friend of a friend, networking, etc...someone opened their door
and provided a place for you to sleep, so you wouldn't need to worry about
added expenses of a hotel, etc.
I am having a bit of a hard time (along with Sal) in getting people to
volunteer to host riders for Eugene Celebration, the Cross Over, and
Co-Motion. Now-this isn't a stab at Eugene by any means-most races in the
Portland area are one day events-but I just wanted people to stop for a
minute, and think about everything that has been given to them in order for
them to "clip and pedal" and to evaluate what you have given back to OBRA as
a whole.
Those of us that officiate do not do it for the monetary rewards. Riders
looking for a place to crash are not expecting the Ritz-a floor, shower and
sometimes if possible a kitchen is all that is needed(eating out is
expensive too).
As of this moment, I am actually considering moving my furniture out to the
carport, and making the living room one big campsite, and possibly just
setting up a sprinkler and slip and slide for people to soap and rinse
off..sounds fun huh?
If you can help out great-shoot me an email off list. This wasn't a plea
for help-just another thought provoking post, and me not doing what I should
be doing....

Drill Team and State Fair Parade - Silly Bike Fun for All!
Salem's maybe not quite ready for the World Naked Bike Ride, but how
about a bike parade? Enter the State Fair!
Sunday, August 23rd Salem's Bike Drill Team, the Pedal Pushers, will
practice in preparation for the parade at the State Fair!
Come on out and do goofy bike drills with the team! You don't have to
have mad skillz! Carefree fun is the order of the day.
Practice will be at the Oregon School for the Deaf, 999 Locust Street
NE, on Sunday at 4pm. We plan on riding on a community garden tour
from 4pm to 6pm and practicing during and after the bike tour.
The parade is on Friday, August 28th, and leaves the fairgrounds at
6pm. There will be a rolling stop provided by police, so bring the
kids!
You don't have to be a part of the drill team to join the parade - so
if you have some other idea of silly bike fun, you should do that
instead

I think I need to clarify a point. Officials are NOT volunteers, they get
paid. The, however, are not employees of OBRA. They are paid directly by
the race organizer.

In summary I think OBRA is really overdue for a discussion about how the
organization is funded and the direct impact this has on providing
officials.

Path detours begin in Alton Baker Park
Contractors for the Oregon Department of Transportation will begin
using a portion of Alton Baker Park to access the construction site
for the Interstate 5 Willamette River Bridge on Thursday, Aug. 20.
Crews will close north Walnut Road through the park to use it as a
main access route and will provide detours around the perimeter of the
park for the duration of the project. They will also close the paths
along Canoe Canal at the easternmost end of the park for approximately
three weeks.
Kiosks throughout the park display maps of the detours. For more
information, please visit the project Web site at

Just looked at the results and saw a 4th for Meg Mauntner in the
poins race and another national title for Heather Van Valkenburg in
the Sprints. Congrats.

I would like to request an added printable format of the OBRA schedule in a
calendar version on the website. The printing of the current calender form
is really tortuous and the list format is not easy for personal scheduling
purposes. I realize you are all busy but maybe for next year this could be
a to do item.
Thanks for the consideration of this request...
Chris

IIRC there was a calendar created for Outlook in the past.? If there isn't
one setup now, I'd be happy to create it and then send somebody the PST file
