Even though I have not ridden even one lap on the course this year, I can tell those of you interested that this year's course should be the best yet. Water bars and raking have pretty much made the sections where the tires plugged with mud a thing of the past. Sure there will be some mud, but challenging and fun in nature. Jim has made some signage to help riders know where they are on the course. These places have names you know. The peacocks and peahens are ready to rock the day on Sunday and will also cheer ya on during any preride on Saturday. I do not know if Tom is still in need of some volunteers, but I urge those of you interested in helping friends and neighbors get to race their bikes to respond to his note about volunteering. I predict a fast, fun race and even if not as warm as last year... a very nice day to not only race, but enjoy good company, food and beverage after the race (or during the race if you are not racing, but just adding your voice to the crowd).
Support of events like this shows landowners their work (yeah they make some money on parking) in the cycling community is not only needed, but appreciated.

Hey gang! We are one week away from the race.
I have a few more positions to fill for volunteers.
If you have a family member that is going to be at the race, but not racing,
I would love to have them help out.
Give me a call. Or send an email.
Also don't for get to stop by our spongers and thank them for helping
support bike racing in Oregon.
Pop into Cyclepath and purchase some nice Chris King gear.
Enjoy a few pints with friends at Hopworks Urban Brewery.
And if you know of somebody that is looking to buy or sell a home, give Tom
a call.
Now that the race is almost done, I need to get back to work!

Nice music and I wish I could ride that well. I am amazed how so many of
you have such great technical skills on bikes. Thanks for sharing.

Last year it was the $350 race for me (derailleur, hanger, chain, and-of all things- the pop-up that got trashed from wind).
Like you say though, memory is short...

Is Horning's Hustle going to happen? I haven't seen any info yet. I'm not sure why I care. After the mud last year I said "Never again". My memory is pretty short though.
All-
My wife Christine and I (and many others) helped out with the race last
weekend, setting up (and literally building) portions of the course on
Saturday and tearing it down Sunday. We actually had fun Saturday making
the course, and pre-riding it while it was still nice and clean. We had
a lot of help from a lot of people and it was great to see the fruits of
our labor when everybody showed up on Sunday.
I now know first hand how much effort it takes to do this sort of thing.
It's no easy task. And for most people, a thankless one as well. None of
us helped out because we expected to get paid, or compensated in any
other way really. I just thought it was my turn to give back some of my
time for all the time others have spent making sure the rest of us can
race.
So now I am asking everyone else out there in OBRA-land to think about
how much work it takes to put on a race. If you have some time available
before or after a race, please consider arriving early or staying late
to help out. If you have a crew of five or ten people, you can take down
after a race in maybe half an hour. Helping to set up or clean up for a
race is only a few hours out of your life, and it's a very small price
to pay for all the great racing we have here in Oregon. You'll also find
that you get to know the promoters a lot better, which I must admit can
have benefits. And on top of all that, it's good for your karma.
Promoters have a life outside of the race too; they are just as eager to
get home afterward as any of us. Except they can't leave until the
course is clean and the OBRA truck is full. Please consider that before
and after your next race.
