Re: Forwarded from seattlepi.com: Ride early and oftento prepare for a bike tour

Eric:

I know, I need to remember this. Perhaps this week I will take two days off instead of one, and you are right that resting is part of the training. I do think I need to cut back a bit, because I sometimes feel as if I am going to burn out, and yet, I have a nasty habit of continuing to push myself.

Thank you everyone for your expert advice!

keep in mind, you get stronger during recovery, not when you are actually riding your bike. training 365 days a year means you do what you need to do to make yourself stronger, if that is resting, then rest. it's still training.

on the other 3 to 4 days where I should ride hard and long, how long should I ride? Is it based on hours spent on bike or the distance? Well, how far would you ride on those 3 to 4 days? I think I am working a little too hard, but then Lance Armstrong made me feel guilty when I read that he trains or has trained 365 days a year. This has caused me a great guilt trip, and I often think when I do take more than one day off in the week, that I am being a wimp.

I would take 3 to 4 days off per week. by off, I mean still ride maybe an hour or so but ride really really easy working on your form your spin and pedaling technique. The other 3 to 4 days ride hard ! and one of those, ride hard AND long.

after a couple days of rest check your resting heart rate to get a baseline of what it should be when you are fully rested. Then check it every morning if you remember. (This is usually best done when you wake up and still lying in bed...). If its high.. (ie like 60 or 70 rather than 40) then you may need another rest day... Also its good to keep track of your weight every morning. If its down a couple pounds from normal, oops your deyhydrated !

Sounds like you doing great though. Century rides are great too. You don't have to think about a route, or worry about getting lost or food, just show up and ride !

Lily Darcey wrote: I would like some advice from you folks. In July, I intend to to a bike ride, which is sponsored by a local bike shop here where I live. The distance is 215 miles in one day. Currently I am training alone for this ride. I ride 40 miles a day and sometimes as much as 50 per day with one day off in the week. I make sure to hit some hard hills also. On Saturdays, I will do about 100 miles. Last Saturday I kicked it up a notch and did a 172 mile bike ride in 11 hours. I know that may seem slow to you, but my goal was just to make it in one day within a reasonable amount of time. When the time arrives to do the 215 miles in one day in July, I plan to do it in under 15 hours, considering it is going to be on some of Oregon's most grueling mountains. Am I doing too little to prepare, or too much? In order to do the 215
mile ride in July, should I make an attempt to do a ride of equal mileage before the July ride arrives?

Thank you

Lily

Ride early and often to prepare for a bike tour
If you're thinking of going on a bike tour this summer or have
already signed up for one, don't wait another day to start
training.
