XT Drivetrain Question - 8sp vs 9sp

Dave,

There is not a big enough difference in width between an 8-speed chain and 9-speed chain to cause chainsuck without help (odd spacing, bent chainrings, etc).  My only concern in using the same rings would be the wear caused by so many years of riding - they may need replacement in order to work well with ANY new chain, let alone a 9 speed.

I recommend letting a trusted mechanic do the swap, someone with lots of experience between 8 and 9 speed drivetrains.  Your derailers will work, your hub will work (but may need a thin spacer in order to use an 11-tooth), your crank should work.  All you'll need is a chain, cassette, and shifter(s). If your chainrings have some miles on them, they should probably be replaced.  If they've never been replaced, plan on it.

I am thinking of upgrading after all these years.  I want to take my old
Gary Fisher Jashua from 8 to 9 speed.  I got a new XT derailure about three
years ago, so that should work with 9.  The hub should take a 9 speed
cassette.  What I am not sure of is, will an 8 speed XT mountain crank work
with a 9 speed chain?  I've been told it can fall between the rings when you
shift and get stuck due to the more narrow 9 speed chain and the larger ring
spacing of the 8 speed crank.

Any thoughts out there?

Thanks,
Dave
