A year or so ago I wrote an email saying for people trying to upgrade,
1/2/3 races are detrimental to the upgrade process. In 1/2/3 races 3's
now have to compete with the 1/2's for points. Even if the cycling
event has a 1/2/3 and then a separate 3 race, the separate 3 race could
quite possibly not have enough racers for people wanting to score points
(min field size is 60 in OBRA rules). Then if you top it off that the
only other races in Oregon where it is guaranteed field size for a 3
category are the National Caliber Stage Races (Hood, Elkhorn, Cascades),
there are not many chances in regional OBRA races where you actually
race against OBRA members that will be able to count for upgrades.
But I do agree if the field size is small (I'd say 15) in the 1/2 or 3
field to combine them into one race. But that would be an exception. I
think in these early season races the field size of the 3's alone is
like, 65.

Subject: Re: [OBRA Chat] IIIs at KVRR/OR CUP
sal (and obra-land)-
this is a topic which has come up on our team (the lovers) for
precisely the reason that cheryl mentioned - our 1/2s and 3s think it
would be fun to race as a team - but also as a way to promote better,
more tactical racing.
one thing we've discussed is proposing that OR cup races be senior men
(1/2/3) races where 3s can race if (maybe only if?) they are part of a
4+ person team of 1/2s and 3s
As a smallish team, we don't have so many opprtunities to race with
our teammates and to play a bigger role in the race and having a
series of senior mens races could provide more oppotunities for teams
to race more stegically.
i think giving the 3s at kvrr the option could be a good way to try
something out. . .
