I highly recommend using gmail for any email list your are subscribed to. I
am a member of several very high volume email lists and gmail is the best.
It threads related messages so you can easily follow a conversation you care
about and ignore the rest. You can filter and label emails based on many
criteria. For example, all the emails from the OBRA list get an OBRA label
and bypass my inbox entirely. I can browse all the OBRA mail or search for
something I care about. I also "star" emails that I intend to follow up on
or refer to later.

I generally delete the digested email. It takes just as much time as comming to the website and reading the threads that interest me. Sometimes it's even longer to read the all damn emails.

I tend to not pay attention to the list unless there's a topic that interests me, or I'm looking for some specific information. Sounds like if you elect to go web only, digest, or every email there will be downsides. I'd rather get a digest or look online than have to spend an hour deleting individual emails from my inbox.

anywhoo.... what's the next topic to rant about. I'm home sick and want something to read.

Congratulations you have just triggered an auto smart
ass reply.

To get rid of the most pointless e-mails, just delete
anything sent by me.

Greg

Even I am not safe from the auto smart ass reply.

An email list is much more passive than a forum; you don't have to do anything to have the action come to you. Going from an email list to a forum is often a hard sell.

You can use rules in your email client to filter messages to appropriate folders. Gmail is also good for big lists because you can view discussions by thread.

Also, I believe you can just read messages online at www.obra.org in a forum-ish interface.

PLEASE! I'm going crazy digging through the dozens of sarcastic comments to find the rare nugget of OBRA information, like what side to pin my number on, who placed in last weekend's race, or who's selling a cheap stem. I suspect I'm not the only one. If your email is addressed to only one person or a few people, please just send it TO THEM ALONE and stop stuffing our mailboxes with this back and forth petty jib jab. This valuable OBRA list is becoming unusable.

Rather than just complain though, I propose that OBRA begin using a more appropriate technology such as an online forum. They're perfect for such discussions, they categorize everything, you can post info, subscribe to particular topics etc. You only see what you want to see. With several thousand OBRA members, it seems like the time is ripe to think about setting one up rather than using just the email list. If you don't know what an online forum is, here's an example: http://www.sportbikes.ws/

I've set up a quick survey...let's see how many in OBRA-land would rather use a forum tool. http://3obra.blogspot.com/2007/04/obra-poll.html

Try this link for a good spam blocker that you can train! It also free.
I use this with Outlook and it keeps all my business / personal email free
from the Obra list, then once in a while (more than I should) I look at the
Obra emails for a good distraction. It's all good in my opinion and I can
decide on what I read.

I agree. I think that hitting the delete button is a cheap cost for the benefits this list provides, such as:

-selling at no cost (no ebay fees)
-Buying cheaper and locally
-info on the organization and rules that I would not know about unless someone else brought them up
-entertainment from the occasional cheap shot.

I don't mind all of the extra crap that comes in my box.

Phil,
I am going to reply to all because this might be a real good thread. I did reply to your survey and think it would be interesting to try a forum.
There are obviously a number of people like you because every time a thread gets a little long someone complians.
Personally I like the banter and it's easy for me to sort thru. When I see people post with a "reply only to me request" I am often interseted in the subject, and have seen others reply asking for "replies to all".
As people have said before there is the obra race list as well for race only stuff. I do suspect you are in the minority, it would be fun to see, hope that survey gets lots of responses.
It would be interesting to see if we could get a big thread going about big threads and get people to complain about the thread size, maybe it would snow ball and block-up the whole internet.
I really am not trying to put more pressure on the tormented just sticking up for the majority!?

Personally I find the back and forth jib jab entertaining. For the most part
in only happens a few times a year and the topics are for the most part the
same: centerline violations, blocking, wheels, masters 123 and event prize
list distribution. I usually read the first few posts then start to delete
them. I am quite surprised that we have not talked about centerline
violations yet this year this topic typically takes place after either
cherry pie or piece of cake.

An email list is much more passive than a forum; you don't have to do
anything to have the action come to you. Going from an email list to a
forum is often a hard sell.

You can use rules in your email client to filter messages to appropriate
folders. Gmail is also good for big lists because you can view discussions
by thread.

Also, I believe you can just read messages online at www.obra.org
in a forum-ish interface.

Subject: [OBRA Chat] STOP THE MADNESS

PLEASE! I'm going crazy digging through the dozens of sarcastic comments to
find the rare nugget of OBRA information, like what side to pin my number
on, who placed in last weekend's race, or who's selling a cheap stem. I
suspect I'm not the only one. If your email is addressed to only one person
or a few people, please just send it TO THEM ALONE and stop stuffing our
mailboxes with this back and forth petty jib jab. This valuable OBRA list
is becoming unusable.

Rather than just complain though, I propose that OBRA begin using a more
appropriate technology such as an online forum. They're perfect for such
discussions, they categorize everything, you can post info, subscribe to
particular topics etc. You only see what you want to see. With several
thousand OBRA members, it seems like the time is ripe to think about setting
one up rather than using just the email list. If you don't know what an
online forum is, here's an example: http://www.sportbikes.ws/

I've set up a quick survey...let's see how many in OBRA-land would rather
use a forum tool. http://3obra.blogspot.com/2007/04/obra-poll.html

I you want to harrass me about this feel free to email me directly :-)

Thank you,
