David, Thanks for all the links... For the uninitiated, College
Street, in Portland's Goose Hollow neighborhood, has been a test of
climbing skill (the hardest part is keeping the front wheel down and
maintaining traction at the same time) for more than three decades.
There have been some pretty ugly climbs in Oregon races too... I
remember riding a stage race in Newburg many years ago that climbed
Laurel Hill repeatedly... some of the best climbers in the state were
walking on the last circuit. The finish was at Bald Peak state
park. And then there was the old Tour of the Willamette, that a
couple of times had a stage finish at the KVAL transmitter...
Fastest way to finish was to kick of your shoes and shoulder your
bike for the last two or three hundred meters.
