FW: wheels- Eugene Roubaix

Doug Turnbull

2007-04-19

I've ridden the gravel on Cantrell several times with skinny little
23c tires and haven't flatted on it.... and I weigh 230+ lbs. I do
plan on racing on some meatier tires, however (25c's). Seriously,
the gravel section is in good shape and is totally flat and
straight. I wouldn't consider it dangerous.

Riders from the Eugene area frequently use this stretch of gravel year around as a short cut home. A car can kick up dust in July, but dust won't be a problem this time of year. I applaud the Mid-Town team for stepping out the box and trying something unique. This will be a fun course for those who like short rollers, and enough distance on the flats to catch up if you get dumped. Although the pitches may be steep, I never need anything more than a 39-23, even after a long ride and I am tired.

Just tell me how it compares to the Skull Hollow ride from a few years
ago. If Skull Hollow was a 1 on a road surface scale of 1 to 10 (PIR
being a 10).....how is this road surface?

I think I was one of the very few road bikes to finish that Skull hollow
race. I used 28c armadillos at 90 psi. My teeth and hands hurt at times,
but I didn't flat! That race was "gravel" if you consider fractured
angular volcanic rock on top of washboard bedrock..."gravel".....You
didn't need traction, just needed to prevent flats. Is this course a
traction problem course that should warrant cross tires or a flat-fest
course?

Any locals who can enlighten us on the course conditions would be
appreciated.

My last message was not meant to dissuade anyone from doing this race. I
am still in charge of the obra checkbook and am fairly conservative on
what expenditures I approve. I am not sure that the obra wheels are
stout enough for the course.
With this in mind, see Galen's note below about the course. Choose your
wheels carefully and do not depend on having the obra wheels in the
follow cars. Have a great time!

I saw your post regarding the Roubaix course. It's actually in great
shape - I rode it yesterday, and it's only going to get better. It's
even been steamrolled. There are no turns on the gravel, its dead
straight, no potholes, all smooth, well packed, etc.

Blogs are all the rage these days, but here's a series of pics:

We could definitly use the wheel car if they are willing! We are all
systems go for this race, permits, volunteers, etc is all lining up,
getting the car would be icing on the cake.

Thanks,

Galen
