Looking for advice on a travel case.

We just got back from Spain. We took 3 planes and 3 different airlines. We
never paid a fee. Our coupled bikes meet all the size requirements.

I've heard recently that international flights are starting to charge
now too. They have generally not done so in the past
but as Jake said, it's hit or miss who is behind the counter. I've been
on the same flight with other riders and I got charged
when they did not. But they may all charge soon. The last time we flew
to Europe, Delta wrote in our freq flyer info that there is no charge,
since their partner, Air France, didn't charge. But who knows if this
will work again.

Like George I use a trico it has been on many trips and although
there is a fair amount of disassemble involved but nothing difficult
and the packing takes only 15 minutes. On the airlines question, when
asked, "what in the box?" I have on occasion answered "exercise
equipment" and not been charged the extra $60. Sometimes the ticket
counter/bag checker will simply give you a pass. on international
flights there is no charge on many airlines. I have found it is just
a case of the luck of the draw. Many of the people behind the counter
know well, when they see a trico (or any other bike case), that there
is a bike inside and automatically charge for it.

A couple of personal experiences:

Charges are for flight segments. I was charged twice on a trip to
hawaii, then again on the return.

Large bikes don't always fit into cases.

If your case is heavy, the combined weight can incur overweight
charges, which I recall as 65 lbs, but that was some time ago.

My conclusion: If I'm traveling within the US, its often better to
just rent something. If I'm going to Costa Rica, better to take my own
bike.

Mike and I both have coupled bikes. His is a Ritchey and mine is a Belinky.
We have never been charged for a bike.

The TriCo cases are good, as are the Pedal Pak.

Ditto! We are looking at the 2007 Sci-Con Evolution cases. They are pretty
expensive ($750 from BikeMania.biz), but have some decent features that make
them stand out. But, in the interest of economics, has anyone ever tried
either the Thule travel case or the VeloSafe II (for two bikes)?

Oh, side note. All of the bike case dimensions are well below the airline
maximums (United) for "oversize" baggage. The Sci-Con Evolution cases are
the lightest at 25 lbs (25 lbs BELOW the max weight of 50 per bag). So, if
we are each bringing a backpack and one bike case, how likely is it that we
will not have to pay the "oversize baggage fee? Any experiences here?

Thanks, All.
