cross bikes at Spring Thaw

Bryan Foster

2007-05-01

Hey Brian,
All I have for the dirt is a cross bike and I ride all the trails around
here on it without any trouble. I raced the last 2 Humbug Hurry-ups on it
and finished with a 4th and 7th. I was more concerned with the legality of
it since cross bikes were not allowed at the Mt. Ashland Hillclimb last year
and I was thinking it was because of the championship aspect of the race.

But isn't mountain biking all about the bike handling?

Keep in mind that 'cross tires have more rolling resistance than low
pressure MTB tires over anything rougher than hardpacked, smooth dirt. They
of course are quite prone to flatting on anything more than pea gravel.

In 12 years of racing I have seem the 'cross bike idea many times. I don't
ever remember it resulting in an advantage and generally those who tried had
nothing but trouble.

Good luck!

everyone else the whole rest of the race...

Since the Spring Thaw are the State MTB Championships, will cyclocross
bikes

be allowed to compete? What are the rules?

As long as your cx bike has a good granny gear, sure. It's some steep and unrelenting stuff. Because the upper road sections are so rolly/flattish w/ a lot of steady efforts, I'd say the benefits of a cx bike don't outweigh their disadvantages on the descents. You would gain some extra benefit w/ having a lower rotating mass w/ cx wheels.. but, I know that for me, 3lbs. of extra "frame mass" on the old 40 minute climb only costs 35-40 seconds. That is why I ride full susp. Say your cx bike is maybe 5-6 lbs lighter than MTB, that only saves 1-1.5 minutes on the climbs. Maybe a little extra savings due to lower weight of the wheels while applying the same wattage output. But, you'll easily lose that advantage and then some when the trails turn downhill. It really depends on your own individual strengths and weaknesses. Traditionally, the group that gets to the top first and can work together can make a big gap. But the stragglers can also join up and work just as well. Choose y
our own tool carefully, and above all, HAVE FUN!

If you wanna do your own calculations and play with the math, try www.analyticcycling.com and it will show you how insignificant the extra weight is.

How's a cross bike going to fair on the single track, though? Anyone
familiar with the course care to comment? I've got to admit the amount
of road described on the flyer makes me want to bring my cross bike too.
