I think the question was more along the lines of what he "should" race.

Keep in mind if you race 40+ you will be racing against some very strong, very experienced Cat 1/2/3 racers.

For your first few races I would recommend riding with others of like ability rather than racing your age.

Candi is of course correct.
For road categries, regardless of age men start at Cat 5, Women at Cat 4. You work your way up from there.
You can also always race your age unless the age is also limited to categoris, i.e. "Masters 40+ cat 123"

Women can also race the womens race in their category. women can also races the mens race in their category, and women can also race one category "down" in mens, i.e. a cat 3 woman can race with the cat 4 men if she wanted.
