I don't think fines should be assessed based on a cost per pound basis... EVER. Not only is it not fair, but it would not discourage anyone. The point of fines is to provide a disincentive to repeat that behavior, instead of jailtime. $8.25 one a year, or every couple years would not provide any motivation to anyone to change a behavior that is in violation of current laws.

I don't see what the big deal is about stopping. Stopping your bike for a sec, to see if it's clear AND to yield the right of way is a small price to pay for not having to ride on the sidwalk. Now if a group rolls through, generally the first person signals a slow, looks and calls out if it's clear, and each successive rider does the same thing. The pack then becomes one unit and should be treated as such.

I think the law about stopping at a stop sign is just fine, annoying at times, but just fine for many reasons. Different rules for different people does not always work, and could potentially interfere even more with the flow of traffic. Not to mention it's not only about the amount of damage your bike could cause, but the amount of damage you're potentially asking for for yourself. While the damage to a motorists car that hits you could be minimal the impact upon their psyche could have far reaching effects. That means it's not only affecting just your life. I think it's all of our responsibility to take into account the potential consequences of our decisions on others.

What are the first words out of your mouth when a cyclist cuts you off in a car, or you almost hit someone blowing through a stop sign while you're driving?
