July 27, 28 & 29 is the seventh, of nine stops of the new American Track

Racing Association series American Velodrome Challenge in

Portland. Portland has the largest prize list of any track race in the

United States for the 3rd year running.



Mary Nothstein, 2000 Olympic Gold Medalist will be attending this years

event, but he is not the only National Champion coming. The roster of

competitors includes National Champions from Australia, Canada, Trinidad,

New Zealand in addition to the United States.



Velodrome racing has always been the "Wild Child" of bicycle

racing. Velodrome racing has a long and rich tradition in this

country. Here in Portland we continue the tradition of fast, exciting

track racing at Alpenrose which is one of the steepest tracks in North

America with its' 42 degree banking and fast drop-offs in the turns. Track

racers fly around the velodrome on bikes with one gear and no brakes at

speeds up to 40 mph. They seem to defy gravity as they ride the steep

banking, which is as high as a two-story building at the rail. Each race

is short and the action is fast and furious.



We, the organizers of the Alpenrose Challenge, the nation's number one

bicycle velodrome event for 2001, hope we can enjoy the honor of your

presence as our guest at the event this weekend. As always admission is

absolutely free.
