Mt. Hood media coverage

I think Mike hit it on the head sports orginizations of all kinds similar to
other entertainers have a staff publicist to dot the eyes and cross the
TTTT's so there horses get press. With the expanse of photo journalists in
the sport they also should submit shots for stories.

Let's go through this, point by point....

1) Bike racing is cool. So is hurling. And so is field hockey. Lacrosse
is growing on the west coast by leaps and bounds. We have an Olympic gold
medalist in saber in the Portland area. Cool has little to do with what you
see on TV.

2) What "other sports?" Baseball, football, basketball, soccer? The ones
you see on TV? The ones that have multi-million dollar budgets?

3) There may be "hundreds of OBRA members" but that hardly represents a
"market segment" that the bean counters can put on a pie chart.

4) There "hundreds of OBRA members," right? How many have called or
written the Oregonian or any of the local TV stations and asked for more
coverage?

Reality time: cycling is an elitist sport in America. It doesn't sell air
time or column inches unless there is a drug scandal or someone dies or an
American wins the Tour d' France. Get used to it. I, for one, would not
want to see it get popularized in the mass media sense.

The real problem, as I see it, is that once Joe or Debbie Six-Pack get any
kind of negative view of bike racing,( "... Honest to god, I had to wait
five minutes for a bunch of wimps on bicycles to go by before I could go
through the intersection. "), it hardens into long term memory.

If you want to see more cycling in the media, ask the media to show it.
Just be sure to tell them how much beer they'll sell when they do. Need I
add the ;> emoticon?

End of message. Now get back on your bike and go ride.

I should have written my original post more clearly.
I realize there is no paid OBRA staffer to do all of the odds and ends. I'm amazed and grateful for all of the behind the scenes work that does get done by the organization.
My thought process was something like this:
1. bike racing is so cool.
2. Why doesn't it get the coverage like other sports in the paper?
3. There are hundreds of OBRA riders.
4. Surely there is someone out there who could help us get the word out about this amazing sport we all enjoy.

Who is this OBRA you are talking about? It is not like there is a staff to
do "OBRA" things. In general, press releases and media relations are the
responsibility of the individual race organizer. We have, in the past, done
some media relations items as an organization and I personally think that
this is something we need to do much more of but, as with many other things,
the individuals that are doing the stuff we are currently doing are
completely tapped trying to accomplish what we are already doing. Maybe
someone on the list could step up to push this issue.

Hi OBRA,
I was disappointed that the Mt. Hood race was not covered by the Oregonian
(or did I miss it?). Seems like it is one of the biggest bike events in the
state and we don't even get a paragraph on the last page?! It made me wonder
if OBRA ever does press releases or notifies the media of our events. Matt
