All,
Here is an update I just received from Erik Tonkin about this Sunday's Skibowl short track race:
I went up to Ski Bowl yesterday, and we put down a course that routes entirely within the bowl (close to the main parking lot). We'll start on the gravel path next to the Hurricane bike shop and head up (south) the gravel descent that typically finishes the XC course. We'll only climb half of it and then make a 180^ u-turn, descending back down (north) along a grassy trail ajacent to the climb and then spilling onto the gravel for a brief two-way traffic section. We'll turn right (east) just as the Hurricane is on the left, where we'll wrap around another building and then climb up a path (north) toward the parking lot. We'll turn left (west) on the pavement, race right in front of the lodge, and then dodge behind the small registration building, turning into (south) a small cluster of trees for a short but super-tight and technical trail section. Leaving the trees, we'll head across (east) the bumpy grass where the awards ceremony is held. We'll run backwards thru the X
C course's finishing chute to complete the lap.
The lap time should be about 3 min. or less. I'd expect 8 laps but maybe 9, and race time should be under 30 min. The two "climbs" on the course are at most 30 sec. efforts, and the first climb will be hit with a great head of speed.
Also a reminder that there will be a very attractive cash prize purse for the top finishers in the Pro/Semi Pro/Expert category. First place in Pro/Semi Pro Men gets $100 (courtesy of short track sponsor Sellwood Cycle Repair) and pay-out will be more than 50% of total entry fees, 25% deep (if 20 race, then 5 will get paid, etc). Finally, most all the Oregon Pro MTB riders will be at Deer Valley, so the prizes are for the taking at Ski Bowl.
See you on Sunday!
~Kris
