SkiBowl MTB

Ron and Dorothy Strasser

2007-06-20

Wow! This is starting to sound like we have to make all these tough decisions (to race or not, to keep relatives/friendships alive etc.) on our own. Life is getting kinda scary!

I agree. Evan meant not to belittle folks. He sees that events must be supported to continue and he understands as well that people do have other lives. He was just making a point (that is so easily misunderstood with this mode of communication) that what he had just done was alot of fun and everyone should have so much fun. I think Evan is one of the most positive forces in OBRA. But all of are as well.
See ya all at the next race you or I attend.

Originally, there also was the Larch Mtn Hillclimb, which Ernie cancelled due to the conflict. This year has had a lot of schedule conflicts, which in some ways is a good problem to have if you like to have a lot of races and variety, but it does kill attendence. Almost every weekend track race conflicts with a road event. AVC has a conflict on both Saturday and Sunday.

I truly believe in supporting the promoters. They all put in some very long hours to give us the best races out there. I believe that was the intent of Evan's message... no need to take offense.

If we don't support the races they won't be there for us to make a choice. No need for explanation, we just need to race when we can to help support OBRA. It's scary to see what the NMBCS has come to as far as #'s are concerned. Deer Valley was a ghost town because or poor marketing and whatever else. I share Evan's concern about attendence... We should do something about it while we still have the choices we do.

Evan, et all

Before I start, I'm glad you raced and enjoyed your weekend racing up at ski bowl.

I don't think berating people for not racing is actually any way to say "hey you missed a great race". It sure won't get me to show up for any race. Personally, i do not feel compelled , or pressured, to race every single race, well promoted or not, father's day, NMBS, etc. A person's reasons for racing or not are their reasons and they do not need to justify them to any one except themselves. PERIOD!!! My personal reason for not racing, I needed to spend some time working around the house, and I felt like going a nice long road ride. Racing was not on my calendar NO MATTER WHAT RACE! I did not forget, I just did not want to race.

Consider dropping the sarcastic bullshit and simply let people know that Petr puts on a great race, at a great price, on a great track, all of which I agree with, and leave it at that.

Gordon

P.S. Thanks for the heads up about the State Games. I might see you their for a great race and some great fun.

Even's comment was nothing to get that worked up about. He was just trying to spur people to attend races, and meant it in a good natured way. If it does not manage to get you to go, so be it. No reason to get defensive or to need to defend your priorities. We support them whatever they are.

Bear,

i totally agree that promoters put in an enormous amount of time, and when we have time, desire go race, say thanks, and enjoy. What is not necessary is telling people they have no excuse for not racing regardless of their lives as non-bike racers/riders.

I have raced at Petr's race's many times over the years and always have a great time and will continue to when I have time.

I also think part of the problem is that the xc race could have fallen
victim to too many races on Sunday. It was competing with Mt Tabor in
Portland that day. I race both mtb and road so someone is going to lose
out when two cool races are scheduled for the same day. I am probably
in the minority though.

As for me, I actually had something going on for Father's Day. If the
race was Saturday, I would have done the xc race. And the only other
race that was going on Saturday was the OBRA track championships. I
don't know how many people do track and mtb., but I got to think it is
less than people doing road and mtb so there is less of a conflict on
the schedule.

I think that part of the problem is that some race organizers do no
promotion of their event. How hard is it to send a message out to the
list
and remind them? Just linking to the calendar is rather lame.

Ok. So I am going to call ya' all out:

We went up to the Shiloh race at SkiBowl yesterday. Perfect track, great
prizes, free beer at the finish, $15 entry fees--NO RACERS!

So, it was fathers day, poor weather, NMBS race wknd, Tabor race,
WHATEVER... Next month is the State Games race at SkiBowl. Mark your
calendars and get on up there. Everyone who calls themself a mountain biker
in PDX has no excuse!

Petr has been providing a nearly timeless constant in racing for as I have
been doing this (13 years?!). Give him your support OBRA!

For the record, I have raced every 'Bowl race for the last couple years and
there has been nothing to EVER complain about. They are doing the best race
promotion around and everyone who races MTB in Oregon and Washington should
be there to support/enjoy it!

Thanks for listening. Now go ride your bikes already!

Evan
