While the AVC was a major success on the home front, and Lance did his thing

in Paris (Whoop, Whoop), the US also hosted two very successful Junior

World Junior Championship events: The Junior Track World Championships in

Trexlertown, PA and the BMX World Championships in Louisville, KY.   The

U.S. Teams also had great results at the Junior Track Worlds. While almost

700 riders of all ages showed up for the BMX event. Check out this web site

It looks as if the 17-18 results are not up yet. How does one score such

things anyway?

Sarah Uhl won the women's sprint by beating the defending world champion

from Germany in two straight rides. Sarah was the first American to win a

junior track world championship title since Jessica Grieco won a world title

in the individual pursuit back in 1991. Sarah is coached by Bob Shuler



Sarah Hammer won the silver medal in the individual pursuit. The last

American junior rider to win a medal in the pursuit was Grieco in 1991.

Sarah is coached by Mark Whitehead.



Christian Stahl won the bronze medal in the men's kilometer time trial. The

last American junior to win a medal in kilometer was Craig Schommer all the

way back in 1984. Christian is coached by Des Dickie.



We had the most successful junior track Worlds from a medal perspective

since 1991. The 1991 team won 4 medals. No other U.S. junior track Worlds

team won 3 medals.



Our 13-member U.S. team had 10 top 10 finishes.



The results, by athlete, were as follows (*asterisk denotes first-year

juniors):

Sarah Uhl -- 1st, match sprint; 4th, 500-meter time trial

Sarah Hammer -- 2nd, individual pursuit; 9th, points race

Christian Stahl -- 3rd, kilometer time trial, 9th, Olympic sprint team;

12th, match sprint

*Tyler Farrar -- 7th, individual pursuit; 8th, team pursuit team

*Josh Kerkhof -- 8th, team pursuit

Bobby Lea -- 8th, team pursuit; 9th, individual pursuit; 16th, points race

Guillaume Nelessen -- 8th, team pursuit

*Hans Taufen -- 8th, team pursuit

*Larry Detris -- 9th, Olympic sprint team

David Wiswell -- 9th, Olympic sprint team

Lauren Franges -- 9th, individual pursuit

*Rikki Boucher -- qualified 14th in the 200-meter time trial for match

sprint but didn't advance in the tournament

*Blake Caldwell -- was alternate member for team pursuit



Finally, we greatly exceeded our performance goal, which was to "place in

the top 8 in two events at Junior Track World Championships". We had 6 top 8

finishes.
