The "Route Info" section of the Portland Bike Forums are a great place to find route advice. Here's a thread on coastal routes:

Hood to Coast took this route 20 years ago when they used to finish in Pacific City. 101 is narrow and busy, but you can ride a few miles north and then head west over to the 3 Capes Scenic Route. It starts down by Pacific City, and you can take it north through Netarts, Oceanside past Cape Meares to Tillamook. Great road. 18 and 22 aren't

Tillamook to Lincoln City Area:

If you don't mind a big climb (paved), and a couple of miles of packed gravel later, the least traveled, and most scenic route is west out of Carlton. You start out on Meadowlark, then have a big climb up to and past McGuire reservoir, then start down the other side following the Nestucca River on the Blaine Rd. You come out on Hwy 101 in Beaver. Great road. 18 and 22 aren't bad over to the Lincoln and Pacific City area, but a road to avoid is the bypass through Sheridan and Willamina. It looks good on the map, but is worse than staying on the highway, narrow and lots of trucks. If you do take 18, a good side road is North Bank road at Rose Lodge. Jump on that and connect back into 18 at Otis, or take the old scenic highway north to Neskowin. I've ridden all of these, if you have any questions give me a shout.

Have a good ride,

Dave

Hey OBRA members -

Does anyone have suggested cycling routes from Portland (Hillsboro) to the Oregon coast (either Cannon Beach, Tillamook or Lincoln City) or anyplace in between, Any & all input is appreciated (including roads to stay off).

Cheers

I would avoid Hwy 6. There is a route from the Flying M ranch area down
the Trask drainage and out along the Trask river. I don't know it's
current condition. During the week watch out for log trucks but the SUV
s on the weekends present the greatest challenge.

CM,

Check out this web site:
http://www.portlandonline.com/transportation/index.cfm?c=39889

There are three great routes listed with detailed maps. I've done the
Manzanita route and the Nestucca River Road route. They are both excellent,
but the dirt part of the Lower Nehalem River Rd. is a pretty tough going, so
if you're not up for that challenge you might go a different way. The
Nestucca route is amazing. It is a fair bit of climbing through the coast
range and the dirt road is a short and smooth section. On weekdays there
will be logging trucks. There is camping along the way and also out on Cape
Lookout. Pacific City is about 15 miles further down 101 if you want to stay
in a hotel. We ended up doing that last September when it rained for the
whole ride and we just couldn't bear to stay in a tent!

Have fun!

Tony
