You must have "clicked" on the 'training ride route' button.

Hey, there's a new twist on training.  Ride where ever the Google route sends ya!  Results may very.

Well, it needs a LOT of work.

I just mapped a ride that is 22 miles from origin to dest and it sent me on a 100 mile odyssey that included 45 miles on a dirt road?????

I mapped out a route from N Portland to West Linn and it sent me across the Sellwood Bridge and down Macadam.  I've ridden on both of these but only on Sat or Sun mornings no later than 8 am.  Other than that I wouldn't dare.  I can see it being valuable once they are able to filter out these kinds of streets.

I got routed on Division, Powell, over the Ross Island bridge and then onto
Barbur.

The recommended route was only .4 miles shorter than my usual
Yamhill\Belmont\Ankeny\Hawthorne Bridge to Barbur route which is much less
stressful.

I'll provide feedback to them. I would hope they somehow integrate work done
by the BTA and the bike mapping as well as that ByCycle site which provides
pretty good routes.

Very cool. I'm having fun with it now. Comparing Walk/Bike/Drive/Transit
times.

If you didn't notice- Google Maps now has a neat new function where you can change a route. For example, I was asked how to get down the the Fairview Race from Woodburn on a bike. Normally, this would take you on I-5. With the new function, you can drag the route onto other roads. This allowed me to change the route to Howell Prairie Rd. by dragging and dropping points on the route. There's a tutorial on the main google maps page.
