Floating a Recruitment Idea For Bike Teams

I think Darren has a good idea. Any chance of contact will give folks a
chance to try racing. There are lots of people that come to "watch" a
crusade race that get the bug to "ride". Other locations as Dan mentioned
are good too. The people that try racing will either stick with it or
not... but making it accessible is the way to get new people involved in a
great sport.
just my one cent.

Darren,
Except for getting more women involved, I did not know recruiting team
members was a problem. Every team I have been involved with took care to
screen riders because there was a surplus. Is it your perception that teams
are out there thinking they need more talent?
It would be nice to see more women racing but this is probably not the place
to advertise. Any women at a bike race have already been exposed and will
either get the bug or not. Maybe at the aerobics or spinning class? Seems
there are lots of energetic women there that may just need a pointer in the
bike racing direction.
I can see a poster at the gym with Candi Murray pointing a finger wearing an
"Uncle Sam" hat.

What does OBRA land think about an all team recruitment table at an upcoming event, perhaps at an upcoming Cross Crusade cyclocross race or during the series?

I'm floating an idea that needs some discussion, perhaps online, or off. Maybe this has been tried before, perhaps by individual teams, I don't know. If I'm way off base or stepping on toes respond to me off line and I'll back off. To be successful it would need race promoter support, OBRA blessing, and team volunteers. This could also be conducted in conjunction with a strong effort to promote women's racing.

With a little work by existing team leaders or director sportifs, and some volunteers from existing teams, all teams might benefit from a influx of new talent. While 'cross is not traditionally a team effort like road racing, it does draw first timers and curious onlookers that could be future OBRA racers in all disiciplines.

What's needed:
An OK from Ross and Witty to have a table or booth at a Crusade race or during the series.
Some killer raffle items, swag and freebies to draw riders to the booth. (Donated by our friendly local bike shops and friendly local bike industry?)
Raffle tickets to collect names and e-mails.
Friendly team members to help recruit, discuss team benefits, and tell race stories moderately close to fact.
Teams leaders willing to put together and make copies of a flyer or brochure that outlines a bit of who they are, what their teams stand for, what they're looking for in potential teammates.

The rest of us need to invite non-affliated riders to the booth and spread the word that cycling is a great sport and even better as part of an organized effort.

After the raffle the collected names and e-mails could be collated and distributed to the participating team leaders for follow up recruiting.

At this point just an idea...
