When you think of Portland International Raceway, "quiet" isn't typically
the first word that comes to mind. Revving engines, squealing tires and
screaming fans are more the order of the day. Except Mondays, when dozens of
area cyclists clad in brightly colored spandex and aerodynamic helmets speed
around the empty track - their whirling wheels making about as much ruckus
as a swarm of bees. For 15 years, Monday Night Bike Race series has
attracted road racers and triathletes to Portland's premier speedway, where
they can pedal out their yellow jersey dreams ­ or if they're beginners, get
pointers from more ­ experienced riders ­ in a serene silence broken only by
a smattering of applause at the finish line.
