Racing on the last day of the TDF

No written rule, just tradition.
I don't think it would have been wise for Cadel to attack anyway. He
could have easily been bumped down a spot in a Discovery counter attack.
Remember, Discovery had the superior team and Levi was just 8 seconds
behind Cadel in the GC.

Is there some sort of rule (written or unwritten) that says you're not allowed to attack on the last day if you're in contention for the yellow jersey or is it just up to the riders themselves? Perhaps he thought that no one would ever speak to him again if he did attack (and take the yellow)on the last day? I was kind of hoping that he would. I thought that maybe if you're less than 30 seconds off the lead then you can go for it if you want. Does anyone REALLY know what the correct protocol is in these cases? Just curious.

Levi is quoted on Saturday as saying he wasn't going to "Vinokurov" Evans on Sunday in reference to when Vino attacked on the last day of the Tour before. Also, I think Evans was just being coy during interviews before the start of the stage yesterday and he had no plans of attacking as it's seen as a Parade into Paris.
I think it's just an unwritten rule that nobody near the top attacks. Plus I am sure Discovery would have been able to swallow up attacks.

I read that Cadel Evans was trying to decide if he was going to aggressively race the last day of the TDF since he was only 23 seconds behind Contador.
