canti brake woes

Here's the summary:

Cantis, though adequate, are a compromise. Better is a set of discs. (I
knew this, and the next cross rig will have them.)

Pauls rock. They're expensive but worth the clams. Vintage Mafacs are
comparable if you can find them, but they're highly coveted.

Shimano BR550s are easier to adjust than Avids, have much better stopping
power and are generally superior. And they don't tend to squeal.

Tektro Oryx seem to take third place, with better engineering, no squeal and
adequate stopping power, but they didn't get the same accolades that the
Shimanos did.

So I have a set of BR550s waiting for me at the LBS on the way home
tonight. Thanks to everyone for your feedback.

One more month till cross season starts...

Have you tried Kool Stop Salmon pads? Those have worked best for me on my
cross/rain bike.

I don't think they're all that suitable for cyclocross because they don't
have enough rim clearance.

I'm running Avid Shorty 4 brakes on my 'cross bike. On a good day, with the
right humidity and the good lighting, the braking power fore-and-aft is
sufficient. Most of the time, however, it leaves something to be desired.
I have tried nearly all manner of brake pads (Ritcheys seem the best by
far), am running a Salsa cable hanger (which helped a lot). With enough
time and watchmaker's precision, I can get them dialed in. But, they still
kinda...well...suck. I forget until I ride my race bike with compound road
brakes. I know cantis will never be that powerful, but it still gives me
the willies on a wet day.

What are my options? I've read in a few places that the Shimano BR550s are
easier to adjust with better stopping power - any opinions out there?
Anyone have a set of Pauls they'll let go cheap? (Yeah, right). Any other
suggestions?

Thanks.
