Stop the insanity.
There is nothing wrong with LOOK cleats for sprints.
Sprinted many a PIR and even the track pedaling
a zillion RPM on RED LOOK cleats. I have complete faith in them
with the pedals totally clamped down tight.
Truth is this...worn or poorly maintained equipment of
any kind will cause you to wreck so always keep an eye
on the pedals as well as the cleats.
Also remember to keep the shoes that you train/commute in
different from the ones you race in. I have WAY too many shoes
for a guy and I have the Rain/commuting pair the nice weather pair
the ones I road race in and the ones I race track in and a few others
for no other reason than Nashbar had a killer deal! Imagine
if Imelda Marcos was a cyclist!!
The cleats on the rain commute pair have the 'most' wear and I dont
even let those go beyond the wear indicators. Needless to say
I have lots of 'worn' LOOK cleats laying around. Anyone want em
for racing? >:-) BWHA HAHAHAHAAAAAA

I like the SPDs for mountain biking (or commuting). But for road race
use they are too loose for my taste. Anyone with a strong pull on the
back side of the pedal stroke will feel the pedal fingers move.
Effectively that means the front of the cleat is open and any odd twist
will result in a release.
Therefore truly hard sprinting with SPDs could be dangerous. Other than
that they're great.
