Route from Eugene to Florence - RE: OBRA Digest, Vol 20, Issue 3

The Wolf Creek route to the coast has two options, one swings north at
"Alma" (a point on the map, but no town, no services) to 126, joining in
a very narrow portion of 126 that I would not want to ride on; the other
option goes south-west along Smith River Road to end at hwy 101 near
Reedsport. There is a good pavement the entire distance via Wolf Creek
and Smith River Roads, however note that there is poor signage on these
back roads (some are Forest Service roads), and there are no services
(or even houses) for about 50 miles of the route.

The Hwy 36 option is generally good, as has been said it it lightly
traveled on weekdays, except for some logging trucks on the portion East
of Triangle Lake; from Triangle Lake to Mapleton hwy 36 has had little
traffic on the days I've ridden (a Monday and a Friday). Hwy 36 meets
126 at Mapleton, after which Hwy 126 has a wide shoulder for the 12 or
so miles to Florence.

George,
I'd love to hear what input you get on alternate routes to the
Coast. My Sister, who's brand new to cycling, has expressed interest in
riding to the coast and some of the stretches of 126 I think would be a
little hairy for a new rider. Your question made me dig out my Adventure
Cycling map which is part of their series of cross country maps. I thought
their route was just to go out 126, but they divert you from West Eugene to
Noti. They have you go to the end of the bike path and then turn left onto
Greenhill. I think you cross West 11th and then bear right onto Crow Rd and
ride that until it dead-ends into Territorial. Turn right on Territorial
and when you reach Crow, turn left on Vaughn Rd. Take Vaughn all the way to
Noti. In Noti, turn left onto (unsigned) Noti Loop Rd which takes you the
short distance back to 126.
I've also heard that you can take Wolf Creek Rd. out to the Coast
although I've also heard that part of the ride is on dirt roads. On the
Lane County Bike Map, Wolf Creek takes you out to a very windy Siuslaw Rd.
although that still dumps you out to 126 by Wildcat Creek Bridge Campground.
Needless to say, I'd love to hear what responses you get from people who've
actually done the ride.

Thanks,
Scott

Hello OBRA-land,

Some folks from out-of-state are looking for a good route from Eugene to
Florence. Is Route 126 ok, or are there better alternatives? They're
planning to go south along the coast from there.

Please respond to Ken and Joanie Lehman at:

Thanks
