Please note that I mailed just over 2000 flyers yesterday morning with
the incorrect Masters distance on it. Sigh.

Hi all,
I got an email from the promoter asking me to fix the distance on the
June 12 race that includes the 50-59 and 60+ fields to be 50 miles.
Apparently, it was a typo.

Geez, I wasn't going to enter this discussion but at 31 miles I couldn't
resist. What's the point of even racing for 31 miles? Is that for old
guys that only train five hours a week? Old guys that are in danger of
cardiac arrest? Old guys with knee problems? I mean what's that going to
take, an hour 15? If a standard like that is set, I'm pretty sure you
would lose all of the stronger men in the 45+/50+ fields.
Additionally, that point of view is in stark contrast to Joe Friel's
"Cycling Past 50 (The Ageless Athlete)."
I would probably enter a jousting duel to fight against any attitudes
like that. Hogwash!

Personally I think 31 miles is plenty and the hill is too big. I
suspect that the "average" 50+ guy is closer to my point of view than it
is to the "longer and harder" point of view. I also think you guys
complain too much, especially about races that other people are putting
on for you. If you don't like what is being offered then don't go. Race
organizers will get the message.

I agree. I doubt that I will be willing to drive all the way to Madras
for a 31 mile race. I think the organizers have a misguided view of the
50 plus field. Maybe they should enter a road race with us and they can
see how easy it is to chase Dave Zimbleman around the course.

I think it's a great course, but with the distance what it is and I'm in
the 50+ group I'll probably get in the 3/4/5 or 40+ race. Maybe the
race organizer is trying to get some more folks to take part by
shortening the race to 31 miles, but I think it will have just the
opposite effect.

Everyone, men or women, go ride Gateway Grade at race pace once, twice,
then three times and then save enough for the last 3+ miles to the
finish, most likely into a good old central Oregon south wind right in
your face. I know I can't wait. Now that's Championship racing.

Speaking of race distances. I noticed that the Masters 50+ race is only
31 miles, while the 40+ race is 50 miles. I think I can probably
squeeze out the extra 19 miles without keeling over. Is it possible to
give us a race that is a bit longer. This is a ridiculous distance for
a championship race. It is barely longer than the district time trial.
A championship race is supposed to be difficult, and this is far shorter
than any race I have done to date.
