ss full suspension...how to?

The Kona "A" frame has the pivot wrapped around the outside of the bottom
bracket on a large bearing, this puts the pivot right in the center of the
crank so that the chain tension does not change with suspension movement.

Kona tried this a few years ago with the "A" full suspension SS. I think it
was a 4-bar suspension. No idea how it worked, but they don't make it
anymore if that's any indication of how well it worked. Anybody ever seen
one?

If it's an old "unified rear triangle" design, you should be fine because
the distance between the BB and the axle won't change as the suspension
compresses. If it's a newer (better) design, you may need an industrial
strength tensioner, like a derailleur. If the suspension really "elongates"
as it compresses, it may not be possible.

so i hvae this old full suspension mountain bike. it has 8speed on it that
is completely shot and word out. it's not worth getting new parts for it.
but i was thinking about converting it to single speed. but with the rear
suspension...it could be tricky.

any ideas?

Eric,
Like someone else mentioned if its a URT bike it will work, otherwise
you'll need some sort of heavy duty chain tensioner (and will likely
give you grief). That said, when you're chugging up to the top of a
hill, out of the saddle, out of breath and hoping it will end soon, that
old skool FS is gonna be bobbing around making you wish you stayed home.
If you want to try single speeding, get an old hardtail frame and do it
up with a singlelator or an old derailleur set up as a tensioner. Do
it...SS is the way to fly.

I would think that either the pivot point and the BB have to be the same, or you will need a derailleur that will be frozen in place and only serve to take up the chain slack. Of course, once you introduce a derailleur into the equation, even one that does not shift, you lose some of the reliability and simplicity of a single sped.
