FW: Log placed across bike trail? - Eugene Area

They've booby trapped the Larch Mtn time trial for years with tumb
tacks, although that seems to have been corrected now.
One year I picked up a tack and rode to the finish line with it still in
my front tire. I couldn't get out of the saddle and sprint as I was
afraid I'd get a pinch flat from loosing so much air pressure.

Hi-

I stopped and moved a large branch or log out of the bike trail on a
bridge just a few hundred feet south of Gillespie Corners on Tuesday,
and it occurred to me that there was a possibility that it had been put
there intentionally with malicious intent to harm a bicyclist. It was
perpendicular to the trail, and sticking through the bridge railing, an
unlikely position if it just fell off a vehicle.

It was especially dangerous because the bridge rail would prevent a
cyclist from moving to the shoulder. At night, if you didn't see it in
time, one would either hit the log, or be forced onto a road frequented
by logging trucks and speeding rural traffic. Because this was the
second time I had seen a log across the bike path on that bridge (even
though the first time was probably a year ago), I did report it to the
police.

I wanted to alert local bicyclists to the possibility that someone may
be booby-trapping their bike trail. This may not be as far-fetched as
it first sounds, as one bicyclist told me that thumbtacks had once been
placed on a bike trail in Eugene, and another bicyclist said he knew of
people throwing water on a bike trail (at Bailey Hill and 18th) in the
winter to make it freeze over. I was told that there is a lot of
animosity towards bike riders in this area!

So, please keep your eyes open, for the hazards, and perhaps for the
culprits!

Can one get arrested for doing something like that?

I remember riding on some path around Cooper Mountain years ago. We were
going down hill, came around a blind corner pretty fast and found a huge
barricade made with logs and 16# nails sticking OUT towards our FACES. 100%
man made and of ill intentions. It would have been very painful had we not
stopped in time. Some people...
