Exciting, fast and fun bicycle racing at Portland International Raceway continues through end of August

Bicycle racing at Portland International Raceway (PIR) has continued to grow on Monday nights with new racers showing up and seeing what the excitement is all about. Participation has continued to be steady all season, and as the season wraps up there is still time to check out the events. The races run through 8/27/07.

?PIR is a great venue to check out bicycle racing ? even if you just wanting to watch or learn more,? said series organizer Jim Anderson. ?We provide an easy way to get started in racing with little financial commitment and we make it easy to learn about the sport!?

On the last night of the 2007 series on August 27th we are planning a special event for the women?s events (Novice and Open category). There will be clinics, coaches, experienced racers and plenty of prizes and raffle items. We are encouraging any women that are interested to stop by and learn more! We are attempting to network and connect with women that want to race ? so stop on by on August 27th!

?On Monday nights at PIR, we have always supported Women?s racing,? said Anderson, ?and we want to keep that category growing, build a network of women interested in racing and end the season in style.?

All levels and abilities are welcomed and encouraged to attend: all that?s required is a helmet, a road bike and a sense of adventure. Experienced riders from local racing teams are on hand to provide guidance and answer questions. There are separate races for novice masters men (aged 30+), novice women (any age), 2 categories for more experienced masters men (aged 30+), and an open women (any age).

The course is the flat and wide 1.9-mile loop of Portland International Raceway (I-5 Exit #306B). Featuring high-quality pavement for cycling, the raceway circuit is closed to all car traffic for the Monday night bike races. Race distances vary each week.

Entry fee is only $13 for women and masters men, $5 for women under 18. Racers who avoid traffic on I-5 by bike commuting, carpooling or taking MAX to PIR receive $1 off entry, and race organizers will donate $1 to the Bicycle Transportation Alliance, a local non-profit working to making Oregon one of the best places in the world to ride a bike.

Top racers win gift certificates (from Lakeside Bicycles) nightly and for the monthly series, but the emphasis is on learning, improving and getting a great workout in the fun, sociable and exciting sport of bike racing.

Racing starts at 6:15pm on Monday nights May 7? August 27 (no racing June 4th).
