Thursday October 18th "Rollers 101" returns to Dishman
Brainchild of Team Oregon's Mike Murray, Tom Durkin,
and Steve Rapp, Cyclisme added a harmonica and a Lance
Armstrong Junior Olympic Race Series Championship on
North Dekum St, and the rest was history.
This is the birthplace of Bicycles and Ideas for Kids'
Empowerment programming. "Rollers 101" at Dishman
Community Center - 77 NE Knott is where we first found
a kid named Madre Stocker back in 1996. ...or should
I say he found us!
Back in 1996, from the moment we set up rollers,
popped in racing videos, and passed out old Velo News
magazines, kids responded. Madre came in, we fit him
to a bike and he rode the rollers like he was born to
do it.
His mother supported his cycling and soon all his
cousins and the whole neighborhood of Mississippi and
N. Simpson were on the team.
By reaching out with our own rollers time, old
magazines, and pro racing vids, we can become the
programming again.
Kids see us riding, then we hop off and help them get
on one of the house bikes, we hold their top tube, and
bingo, they are riding rollers.
We meet family members, and we are ready to integrate
the child into a team ride.
Please join me in facilitating this 9 week run of
weekly programming starting October 18 and running
every thursday.
If you have questions, or would like to volunteer,
please contact us at this email address.
Best Regards,
John Benenate
