Cycling Injuries

Jeb Stewart

2007-08-31

Crashes stand out like a sore thumb for obvious reasons, but I'd have to
agree with the notion that the stats on how often crashes occur per
individual actually on the course in a race is very low. The most common
injury is the broken collar bone and fortunately that's a relatively easy
one to recover from.

I don't intend to minimize the issue of head injuries in any way, shape or
form, because head injuries are horrible and ideally avoided like the
plague. However, like the issue of drugs in sport, they are given far too
much attention by in a fear based, media-style fashion and seem more common
than they are as a result. That being said, my heart and help goes out to
anyone affected by this horrible accident and their loved ones.

Bottom line is that there are obvious inherent risks involved in cycling,
just like there are in any sport. Compared to the general population, we
actually get injured far less, and especially in comparison to most other
sports.

Actually, the most common form of injury in cycling and endurance athletics
is that of overuse due to improper bike fit and lack of preventative
measures through the incorporation of proper strength and conditioning
techniques in the off-season that address muscular imbalances common to the
sport. These are compounded by the fact that many of us replicate this
posture in our work environment (i.e. sitting at a desk typing away on the
computer, like I am doing right now!). So, fortunately for us, we do have
more control over our health and safety than we often think or take
responsibility for, and that's empowering to know, especially if we take the
actions commensurate with that awareness.

What it all comes down to is that by conditioning our selves properly,
getting our bikes fit to us and not our favorite Euro pro, obeying traffic
laws and the rules of racing, learning to handle our bikes, using proper
safety equipment and riding like decent human beings can eliminate, or at
least reduce, the frequency and severity of the injuries inherent in
cycling. I assume that this along with pure enjoyment and personal challenge
are the main goals most of us are shooting for, or at least I hope so.

Lastly, being conscientious in the moment and putting our focus on what we
want to achieve, instead of on what we are afraid of, can have an extremely
positive and powerful affect on the outcome each time we get on our bikes.
The cycling scene I have witnessed since moving here is, by far, one of the
most amazing and prolific I have ever experienced. I have a hunch it is
going to stay that way, while continuing to get even better.

Have fun, stay safe and go for it...

Sincerely,

1) Re: the safety stats for various activities. I too was pleasantly
survived (oops Freudian slip) I mean SUPRISED to see that cycling seemed to
be safer per hour than driving and many other activities. Then I realized
that this data concerns fatalities, not general injuries. To make the
obvious guess, perhaps one is more likely
to get killed in a car, but more likely to be injured on a bike.

2) One well-known cyclist in the Portland area mentioned to me a few years
ago that he had broken a dozen or so bones during his cycling career.
Perhaps this makes him a statistical outlier, but the person who got the
shoulder injury needs to keep working on it if he wants to catch up.

3) For whatever it's worth, I went down by or on a TriMet track a few years
ago and broke a hip, but was blessed with a rapid surgery and recovery, and
feel lucky because I'd take that any day over the injuries I might have
suffered doing stupid things and escaping unscathed.

4) Most importantly, did I miss any news about the Tuesday night PIR rider
who went down at the end of the 3/4 race with an apparent head injury? If
anyone even knows his name and what hospital he want to, maybe I could make
inquiries and let people know. Rumor has it that he had a pedal problem, or
became unclipped, and the results were really bad. So watch those cleats.

Black hides "things" well, for sure. But for other colors, the weight of

I just got an email from Lena of Hurricane Racing saying that nothing's been
cancelled; both XC and DH races are still scheduled as planned. Let's hope
turnout is good enough to encourage them to keep the races next year.

Hello all,

The project: drop bar on my Cannondale F700 MTB

So... my Magura hydraulic brakes are obviously not compatible with a
drop bar.

To that end, I'm looking to find a set of BB7 Road calipers. I don't
need the rotors really as the Cannondale, being what it is, snubs
standards and has wacky 4-bolt rotors. So I'm going to be using the
Magura rotors with the new calipers.

Anyway-- do you have a set-- front and rear-- of BB7 Roads that you'd
like to get rid of?

Know anyone that might like a set of 2000 Magura Clara hydraulic brakes
in a couple of weeks?

Thanks for reading.

Next Friday...
Event: Brentwood/Darlington Park Cyclocross Clinic

Who:Cyclisme Cyclo crossers Chris Cross and Corn Dog
Brotha will
host Veloshop's Euro Cyclo Star Molly Cameron to
headline
this beginner cyclocross clinic.

Date/Time:Friday September 7th 6:30PM

Where: Brentwood/Darlington Park - SE 62nd and Ogden -
Park
between Duke, Knapp and 60th and 62nd. South side of
the park.
Driving directions: From the south Take I 205 north to
Johnson Creek Blvd exit
or from the north, go south to Foster.
(Duke is smack in the middle of both exits)

What: This is a beginner's cyclo-cross clinic.
We will address the mount and dismount, we will apply
cyclocross-useful intervals of effort, and even
create a little practice race.

How: You need to bring your own bicycle but on this
flat
easy pitch, even road bikes will have fun.

How much: We will be asking for a $2 donation that
will go to support
the cyclocross career of up and coming Euro racer,
Molly Cameron.

Support this fine Oregon grown racer, and give
yourself
a leg-up on cyclocross.

Thursday October 18th "Rollers 101" returns to Dishman

Brainchild of Team Oregon's Mike Murray, Tom Durkin,
and Steve Rapp, Cyclisme added a harmonica and a Lance
Armstrong Junior Olympic Race Series Championship on
North Dekum St, and the rest was history.

This is the birthplace of Bicycles and Ideas for Kids'
Empowerment programming. "Rollers 101" at Dishman
Community Center - 77 NE Knott is where we first found
a kid named Madre Stocker back in 1996. ...or should
I say he found us!

Back in 1996, from the moment we set up rollers,
popped in racing videos, and passed out old Velo News
magazines, kids responded. Madre came in, we fit him
to a bike and he rode the rollers like he was born to
do it.

His mother supported his cycling and soon all his
cousins and the whole neighborhood of Mississippi and
N. Simpson were on the team.

By reaching out with our own rollers time, old
magazines, and pro racing vids, we can become the
programming again.

Kids see us riding, then we hop off and help them get
on one of the house bikes, we hold their top tube, and
bingo, they are riding rollers.

We meet family members, and we are ready to integrate
the child into a team ride.

Please join me in facilitating this 9 week run of
weekly programming starting October 18 and running
every thursday.
If you have questions, or would like to volunteer,
please contact us at this email address.

Best Regards,
John Benenate

Hubs: DT Swiss 340
Rims: Mavic 321 Disc (black, 28mm, 32h)
spokes: DT Swiss
skewers: DT Swiss (the nicer stock variety)

They're "heavy-duty all-mountian/xc" or "light-weight freeride", depending
on if you're a glass is half-full/half-empty kind of person. These came
stock on a complete setup I purchased last summer, and are just a little too
on the meaty side for me. I took them off the bike last summer as well and
have been sitting in storage, I'm just getting around to selling now. I've
ridden XC on them about 12 times (15-30 miles on average). They are clean,
true, and have minimal cosmetic nicks and dings.

Asking $200.00

I'm assuming that emailing me off-list is the proper way to do things around
