Re: Can I use road brake levers with Avid MechDiscBrakes?

The road version that's made for shorter pull levers would be best for your
sti levers. The Avid mechanical disc brakes that you have - for
mountainbikes - must be used with long-pull v-type brake levers in order to
work the way you want them to. Even worse, the short cable travel of your
typical road lever would likely cause your brakes to feel really squishy
and/or drag a bunch.

However, if you're going with bar-end shifters, Tektro makes a very
effective road lever for long-pull bakes. Any bike shop can get them, if
they're willing to look, and they only cost around $40 last time I looked.

Avid makes two versions of their mechanical disc. The road version is
designed to work with the shorter cable pull of road levers.

Yeah, but don't the mechanical (uses a cable) Avid disc brakes take about
the same amount of cable pull as a road lever?

I think Cannondale uses them on their Tandem - STI and Avid mech. disc
brake.

If you want to use road levers on a v-brake or linear pull brake you need a
travel agent on each one as road levers do not have enough cable pull. The
travel agents increase the cable pull by using a cam. The cost is not much
and they are relatively easy to install.
