There are two versions of the Avid BB5 and BB7 mechanical (cable) disc brake calipers. They differ in the length of the arm that actuates the brake, or in the angle of the splines on the shaft. The road version is designed for use with road brake levers that don't pull as much cable as "V" or linear pull mountain brake levers.

I'm no expert but my Cannodale Cyclocross bike has Ultegra shifters and Avid mechanical (cable) disk brakes... it stops just fine

I think Cannondale uses them on their Tandem - STI and Avid mech. disc brake.

If you want to use road levers on a v-brake or linear pull brake you need a travel agent on each one as road levers do not have enough cable pull. The travel agents increase the cable pull by using a cam. The cost is not much and they are relatively easy to install.
