Hi Jeff,
I hit reply all as this could be helpful info for others as well. If the floors are indeed 50's vintage there is a really good chance that there will be Asbestos present in the tiles. If they are 9"x9" instead of the more common 12"x12" modern style VCT (vinyl composition tiles) then the chance is way higher. This does'nt mean you have to freak out, Asbestos removal is only super critical when the product becomes 'friable' or turned into dust. No power tools as a rule for the removal, wear a respirator, keep it damp and use heavy duty floor scrapers. the less you break it the better. It may come up easy or it may come up hard. I think there is a place locally that you can send a sample to have it tested if you like. If you are planning on doing it yourself you might try tearing up a test spot in a closet or other out of the way place to see if maybe a new floating wood floor over the top of it might be better. If
you are going to have someone else do the work this will be good info to have in case they start unloading big power floor grinders from their truck.
All the best,
Jake Rosenfeld

Subject: [OBRA Chat] Off Topic....
Hey is anyway out there in OBRA land an expert on old tile floors....as in getting torn up...
We are ripping the carpet up in our basement and underneath is old probably 1950's vintage thin asphalt type that has been glued down with black roofing glue or something, it will not even scrap up...We want to get it down to the smooth concrete and re-finish the concrete floor and stain or paint that....Any help or if you can come look at it would be appreciated....
Thanks,
Jeff
