Fixed cogs, like freewheels, are Rt hand thread. There are actually
three different diameters and thread pitches in use, (English,
French, and Italian. English and Italian are generally
interchangeable, but not perfect... French is a metric thread and a
tiny bit smaller in diameter. DON'T thread anything but french
threaded freewheel or cog on a french hub.)
Lockrings are always Left thread so that when the cog gets unseated
on hard deceleration (backpedaling) it runs into the lockring rather
than backing off the threads. NEVER tighten the lockring down. It
should be finger tight and should be snug, not tight. If you use a
fixed cog on the freewheel side of a two sided hub (most two sided
hubs are set up for a freewheel on one side and a fixed cog on the
other). If the idea of a cog loosening bothers you, you can use a BSC
bottom bracket lockring on it. In that case, because the two pieces
are both rt hand threads, the only locking will be the interference
between the cog and the lockring. It's probably overkill anyway,
because generally the only application for two cogs on one wheel
would be if you're using the wheel on the road and want to have a
gear selection, and you'll generally have at least one brake in that
event. Is this making sense?
Answering the question you didn't ask... No, I've never ever heard of
a left threaded freewheel, hub, or Track (Fixed) cog. Are you sure
it's not cross threaded or something? Think it through... if a cog
were left threaded, it would try to unwind every standing start, and
every sprint.

am in a state of confusion. I went to the bike shop and bought a new cog,
when I went to install it I found that the Original Cog has left hand
threads. The new one has Right Hand threads. The opposite side of the of
the Original Hub has Right Hand threads so I can fit the new Cog on that side
of the hub but I can not find a Right Hand thread lock ring anywhere. I know
that while pedaling this will pose no problem but what about when I put
resistance onto the pedals to slow down? IS the new Cog an Abberation or is
this the way it should be? Should I return it and find the corrrect Left
hand threaded cog or is the Right Hand OK?
