A very sad day...

To All,

I want to feel safe on the road, to know that someone won't cut me off, pull
out in front of me, or hit me from behind. Literally, every car that passes
me when I am riding I think to myself will this be the one, will they give
me enough room or will I be plastered to the pavement? I get more and more
intimidated to train at rush hour but it's the only time I have. Why can't
we cyclists feel just as safe as the vehicles out there in their metal
machines? What about right of way, yielding, and courtesy? Every time I hear
of another cyclist fallen and motorists aren't held responsible, I feel such
sadness for our community. What can I do? What can we do?

With much sadness and in memory of the individuals and stakeholders within
our community.

Brett was a good guy. I mean that in the formal sense of goodness. I
liked him a lot and I am really sad to hear this. I recall riding home
with him one evening after a training ride, talking about how he
should start a business based on the sole fact that artists are more
interesting to talk to at parties. The weather was a silk robe, it was
so comfortable. The sunset had mellowed to colors Brett could name
(Cadmium Orange, Yellow ochre, cobalt violet) ; the river was peaceful
whisper. Damn

I worked with Brett at Art Media; at the time I was training for the
Portland marathon and only ever rode my bike to commute. Brett talked
about bike racing; I rode up and watched him on Mt Tabor, the first
bike race I ever watched. I can honestly say he was the person who got
me interested in biking as more then just a mode of transportation,
and without him I wouldn't be where I am today. He will be sorely
missed.

My condolences go out to Bretts family and friends, and anyone who knew him.

I was shocked to see the paper this morning. I have nothing but good memories of Brett.

When I was racing seriously back in 2003, Brett was a fine art student that lived down the hall in in my apartment building. He was the friendliest neighbor I have ever had. He invited me out to his student art showings, gave me a tour of the school, showed me the paintings he was working on. He said hi whenever I was in Art Media, where he had worked at the time. He always had a huge smile on his face and was eager to meet new people and make friends.

He had done some recreational mountain biking, and he was tall and lean like a cyclist, so when I saw he had a nice steel Lemond I invited him out on a team ride in the early spring. Once we hit the hills he just took off. He had so much natural ability. He finished at the top of Logie with our Cat. 2 riders that first day.

I had talked to him about joining the team that I was on, but he wasn't sure how much racing he was going to be able to do between school and work. I was really excited when the season came around and I saw him at some Mount Tabor races riding unattached. The course fit his abilities perfectly. He finished well and it wasn't long before he was on a team and winning races as a Cat 4.

I was racing less as he was racing more, but it was always impressive to see his steady improvement, and we always had to say hi and catch up with eachother.

Just the friendliest guy. He will be missed by everyone who knew him.

If anyone gets information on services, please pass it on to the list.

Dear fellow OBRA racers,

Yesterday afternoon, Bike Gallery team rider and co-worker Brett Jarolimek was killed in a collision with a truck while riding his bike on N Interstate and Greeley.

The news of his death comes as a terrible blow to all of us at the Bike Gallery and probably to all of you who knew Brett or saw him recently in action at the cross races. Just this last Sunday, Brett rode one of his best races ever, finishing on the podium in the Singlespeed cyclocross race at Rainier HS.

For most of us, words are falling short to express the deep sadness caused by the sudden loss of a great friend and a wonderful human being. Our deepest sympathy and heartfelt prayers go out to his family, his girlfriend, his close friends, and to everyone who knew Brett as a great guy and an awesome bike racer.

We miss you Brett...
